Rapid assessment launched as Upper Assam flood crisis deepens

GUWAHATI, July 22, 2026 — A rapid needs assessment (RNA) has been launched across the flood-affected districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat to assess the humanitarian impact of the devastating floods that have inundated large parts of Upper Assam.

The assessment follows the severe flooding triggered by a cloudburst reported in Mon district of Nagaland on July 19, which caused a sudden rise in the water levels of the Disang, Dikhow, Jhanji, Bhogdoi, Kakodonga, Dhansiri and several other tributaries, affecting hundreds of villages across the region.

Field teams are conducting household surveys, community consultations, key informant interviews and direct observations to assess the extent of damage to homes, agriculture, livestock, public infrastructure and livelihoods. The assessment is also documenting displacement, access to safe drinking water, sanitation, food security, shelter, healthcare and protection concerns, with particular attention to children, women, older persons, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

The findings are expected to provide evidence-based information to guide relief operations, identify gaps in the ongoing response and support coordinated humanitarian assistance in the affected districts. Situation reports will also be prepared to track the evolving flood situation and priority humanitarian needs.

The initiative is being carried out by the North-East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS) in collaboration with local communities, village leaders, district authorities and humanitarian partners as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen relief planning and resource mobilisation in flood-hit Upper Assam.
