Panic has gripped Bishnupur Adarsha Gaon under the Geleki No-Pam Baruwati Gaon Panchayat in Nazira Co-District following reports of continuous underground gas leakage near an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) oil field.

Residents alleged that the situation has arisen due to negligence on the part of ONGC authorities and warned that a major accident could occur if immediate action is not taken.

According to sources, the incident came to light when gas began leaking under high pressure from beneath the ground inside a broiler farm owned by local resident Basanta Duwara. The pungent smell of the gas quickly spread across the area, triggering panic among villagers.

Following the incident, an ONGC team reached the site and has been carrying out excavation using heavy machinery since Wednesday morning to trace the source of the leakage. However, the exact origin of the gas had not been identified at the time of filing this report.

As excavation continued inside Duwara's premises, fresh gas emissions were reportedly detected from another underground location near an ONGC oil well, further heightening concern among residents.

Fire and emergency service personnel have been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.

Local residents alleged that repeated incidents of gas leakage were the result of ONGC's failure to replace ageing pipelines on time. They demanded immediate and permanent measures to address the problem, warning that continued negligence could lead to a major disaster.
