Assam CM Visits Flood-Hit Nazira, Assures Compensation and Fresh Relief

NAZIRA, August 3, 2026 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday visited the flood-ravaged Nepali Khuti area in Bihubar under the Nazira constituency, where the recent floods caused widespread destruction. Owing to the difficult terrain, the Chief Minister inspected the affected area on a tractor and interacted with residents to assess the damage firsthand.

According to local reports, more than 50 houses, including over 20 government-built homes and numerous bamboo houses, were completely destroyed in the area. Household belongings were also washed away, leaving many families in distress.

During the visit, the Chief Minister assured flood-affected residents that the government would extend all possible assistance. He announced measures including the construction of temporary bamboo shelters for displaced families, compensation for livestock losses, support for damaged agricultural land, and financial assistance for the families of those who died in the floods. He also assured residents that relief would reach every affected household.

During the interaction, a woman who lost her home in the floods alleged that illegal stone mining along riverbanks in Bihubar and nearby areas had aggravated the situation. The Chief Minister took note of the complaint before continuing his visit.

Dr. Sarma also visited Kenduguri, where he interacted with affected residents and heard their grievances. Large numbers of local people gathered during the visit, with some requesting photographs with the Chief Minister.

Later, addressing flood-affected residents at Sundarpukhuri, Dr. Sarma said the government remained committed to supporting those affected by the disaster.

"I extend my greetings to all of you. I had visited Nazira earlier during the floods but could not meet you then. The government has been trying its best to help, but I understand that some people may not have received the assistance they deserve," he said.

The Chief Minister announced that an additional round of relief distribution would begin on August 10, while a door-to-door assessment of flood damage would commence from August 9 to facilitate compensation.

He said trained survey teams equipped with laptops would visit every affected household to document losses and process compensation claims.

"The government has already provided initial financial assistance. After the assessment is completed, eligible families will receive the remaining compensation. We are committed to standing by the people during this difficult time and will continue to support them in every possible way," he said.

During his visit, Dr. Sarma also called on the family of a flood victim at Rajapul Duara village, where he offered condolences and assured them of government support.

The Chief Minister later proceeded to inspect flood-affected areas in the Gormur-Chumoni region of Charaideo district.

Dr. Sarma was accompanied by Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika, Sivasagar Guardian Minister Bimal Bora, Minister Keshab Mahanta, MLA Taranga Gogoi and Nazira MLA Mayur Borgohain.
