More small power prjects to come up in next 4 years in Assam

The Assam Power Project Development Corporation Private Ltd. (APPDCL), a joint venture company of the Govt. of Assam, Department of Power has signed an Implementation Agreement with M/S Brahmaputra Infrapower Pvt. Ltd. and M/S Agnipa Energo Pvt. Ltd to start work for setting-up of two irrigation canal based power project viz Bordikrai Hydropower project (5 MW) at Sonitpur and Pohumara Hydropower project (2 MW) at Baska in lower Assam on tuesday at the conference hall of Chief Ministers secretariat at Dispur. Both the projects are expected to be commissioned by April 2012.

On this occasion, the Assam power & industry and commerce Minister Pradyut Bordoloi said that within the next 4 years the state will be having more small power projects which would add to more than 250 MW and informed that the Govt. in its last cabinet meeting had approved a model Implementation Agreement for both as well as run of the river based hydro projects. He was of the opinion that the Govt. is giving maximum thrust on improving its own generation capability to cater to the large power deficit.

''Today the peak demand for power in the state is estimated at 1000 MW for which there is substantial shortfall and which is being met from the Central Share of power as well as purchasing power from various sources. The projected demand for power is expected to be 1600 MW by 2011-12 and 2700 MW by 2014-15" - the minister added.

He however opined that the APPDCL is taking up many such projects viz-Kalanga 1 & 2 (8 MW) in Karbi Anglong, Desang (9 MW) in Dibrugarh, Borpani (40 MW). Besides, the Assam Power Generation Company Ltd. has also taken up few projects like Dhansiri (20 MW), Bardikharu (2 MW), Amring (20 MW), Mintriang (9 MW) and Lungnit (6 MW).

The implementation agreement was signed in presence of state chief secretary N K Das, Chairman of Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) A K Sachan besides several other dignitaries.
