Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

EC announces RS poll for Assam on March 26

Its’ official. The Election Commission is all set to hold Rajya Sabha election for three seats from Assam on March 26 along with Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal Bihar, Orissa, Guajrat. Manisana panel submits report on Beltola clash

The Justice Manisana Singh Commission has submitted its report on Beltola incident before Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at his residence on Monday. The panel set up on November 24 conducted several rounds of public hearing and even visited the clash site last month and received some startling fact relating on this incidents. Several top ranked civil and police officials including some prominent citizens and even victims deposed before the panel. The incident took place at a public rally organised by the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam and the protesters turned violent and had clash with some other people which left several people injured.

Prayer meet at Dimoria

People of Dimoria joined a prayer meeting organized by Karbi Students Union, Dimoria Tribal Sangha and Dimoria Jila Journalist Association for the peace of the departed souls in yesterday's road mishap at accident spot at Patgaon, Sonapur on 25-02-08.12 people died on the spot at Sonapur when a Guwahati-bound bus fell into a river after the driver lost his control at the dead of the night on Saturday. 61 poachers surrender in Manah before BTAD admn

Altogether 61 poachers in the Manah National Sanctuary on Monday have surrendered before the BTAD administration at Lobdang guri market in Bagsa district. They further have left some arms and ammunitions while they laid down their arms before the BTAD Deputy Chief Executive Khamba Borgoyari. These include 24 hand made guns, several round of bullets. These poachers are residents of ten villages adjacent to the national sanctuary. They have surrendered at a function organised by an NGO Wild Life Trust of India and No 32 Company of SSB in Lobdang guri LP School. They further have pledged not to repeat these mistakes in future.

Tata Sumo falls into pond: 2 dead, 9 injured

Two people dead and nine others have been seriously injured when a Tata Sumo in which they were travelling fell into a deep pond in Jengrai in Majuli on Monday morning. According to information, the vehicle had 11 people while it was falling. Two people died on the spot. Later, the local people came and rescue these passengers. All the nine injured people have been rushed to the hospital. Details are awaited.

Guwahati ready to host East Zone Ranji Trophy cricket

Preparations have reached the final stage in Guwahati to host the East Zone Ranji Trophy One Day cricket match from Tuesday to be held in Nehru Stadium and Maligaon NF Railway stadium. Bus accident sends shockwaves

Five of the 12 bodies of those left dead in the Sonapur incident on Sunday wee hours have been identified and handed over to their relatives at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital campus after postmortem. Five of these bodies were identified and accordingly handed over their relatives. The relatives of these victims broke down as the bodies reached the Hospital campus for postmortem. KLNLF kills 2 Hindi speaking people

Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) militants have killed two Hindi speaking people on Sunday in Assam's Karbi Anglong district early in the morning. According to information, both the victims were from Nagaon who come to Rongpur village when the militants shot them dead from a close range. The KLNLF involvement is evident from KNLF chairman P Dili's recent statement threatening the Hindi speaking people alleging that the government was attacking the KNLF insurgents. That too in the time of peace talks. Earlier on Saturday, nine people sustained injury, when KLNLF militants attacked them with a hand grenade in Diphu.

Bus accident in Sonapur: 12 bodies recovered

As many as fifteen people have been feared killed at Sonapur in Kamrup district when a Guwahati bound Green Valley bus from Silapathar fell into a deep stream at the dead of the night on Saturday. According to information, the driver of the bus carrying 22 people including 18 passengers, is said to have lost its control which lead to this tragic incident.One of the drivers is absconding while the another died on the spot. Asomiya Pratidin being burnt at Kokrajhar

One of the leading Newspaper of Assam "Asomiya Pratidin" Sunday issue (24th February) has been seen burnt down by the angry BPF Supporters at Kokrajhar on publishing of a news item on Transport Minister Chandan Brahma regarding the money spent in BTC Chief Hagrama Mahilary's marriage ceremony.According to the newspaper, the marriage spending was over Rupees 4 crores which Minister Chandan Brahma conspired to spend to malign the image of the BTC Chief Hagrama Mahilary in front of the people of the BTC area, most of whom still sleep with just one-meal-a-day.
