Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

Army jawans dead in mishap

ITANAGAR: Three army jawans died and four others sustained serious injury when the vehicle on which they were travelling met with a mishap in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. The mishap took place in the morning at Dibang Valley as the army jawans based in Sapakhowa in Sadiya were travelling in the neighbouring north eastern state. Senior scribe passes away

Guwahati: City based senior scribe Simanta Bhagawati, who was associated with The Assam Tribune, passed away this (Saturday 21 April) morning. A popular media columnist and also fond of tennis, Simanta faced a massive stroke two days back while he was playing in a city court. His cremation is scheduled to take place this afternoon. Woman gangraped, killed in Bijni

BIJNI: Yet another incident of gruesome gangrape and murder sends huge shock, anger and acrimony across the state of Assam on Friday.  The incident took place in Chirang district of BTAD area where a woman was believed to have gangraped and killed at an open field at night.  According to police, local residents spotted the body of the woman at Mulapothar in the morning who on Thursday afternoon was attending the Bihu function where Zubeen Garg performed.  Bijni police have registered a case and investigation is going on. 14 yr old gangraped in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: In yet another shocking incident, five miscreants gangraped a 14 year old girl before dumping on the roadside in Lakhimpur on Thursday. The incident took place in Dalhat where local resident rescued the victim in the critical condition in the wee hours. Setback for Centre: NGT for fresh panel to study megadam
