Assam celebrated Silpi Divas across the state to commemorate the death anniversary of Jyotiprasad Agarwalla on Friday. Cultural functions, Jyoti Sangeet competitions and seminars were organized in many places to mark the occasion. The central function at took place in Tezpur, the birthplace of the first Assamese film maker.

ULFA-I still firm on demand

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) announced it preparedness to continue the struggle for an independent Assam with an appeal to the people to take an united stand. In a statement issued by ULFA-I on Monday, chairman Dr Abhijit Asom said that the need of the hour to discourage the anti-Assam circle. Pay promise hikes employees' hope

The Assam government employees have every reasons to celebrate. The good news came from Dr HImanta BIswa Sarma who said that the government will implement the pay panel recommendation from April in 2017. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Monday, the finance minister said that the state government employees will get DAamount more than their central government counterparts . According to minister, the pay commission has recommended Rs15000 as the minimum of a state government employee. He said that the government has hiked the family pension and that if the pensioner dies at 67, then the family members will get the entire amount and not half.

BJP win Lakhimpur, Boithalangsu

Militants hiding in Tinsukia

A group of hardcore insurgents from three outfits is believed to have been hiding in a dense jungle along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Tinsukia district. According to sources, the militants from Myanmar have been camping in the jungle to change the R 500 and R 100o note following the change in the monetary policy. These militants are suspected to have attacked the army convoy in Tinsukia on Saturday where three army men were killed and another struggling with death. Three rocket launcher along with landmine were recovered during the combing operation by the security forces in Pengeri forest.
