181 helpline for women

Dispur is prepared to operationalise 181 helpline exclusively for women in distress.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi writes to Chief Secretary PP Verma asking him to instruct the state Home and Political Department to work out an action plan to operationalise the 181 helpline facility for women as it was in other states like Delhi.

Gogoi directed that the helpline be operationalised in consultation with the Assam Police, Health and Family Welfare, Assam State Disaster Management Authority and other line departments. Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Kapil Sibal had written to the Chief Minister to start a helpline service for women in distress in the stat

Night curfew at Gendamari

A gory incident that left 7 people in Goalpara district bordering Meghalaya has forced the authority to clamp night curfew on Monday. Army and police are on patrolling duty at Gendamari area where suspected GNLA militants shot dead seven persons at a dewali function on Sunday night.The night curfew is in force from 7 in the evening to 6 in the morning. National Highway 62 between Damra in Assam and Dalu in Meghalaya as well as NH 51 between Paikan and Dalu along with Khargang-Resubelpara road are not under the purview of the curfew.

Twin murder rocks Jorabat

Two more youths were found dead at Jorabat in the outskirt of Guwahati on Monday.           The semi-naked bodies were recovered from a culvert in the morning.     Both the bodies bore some injury marks in the heads. Police investigation are going on.

Youth killed in Guwahati

Amid dewali pomp and gaiety, a youth was beaten to death in Guwahati on Sunday night.    Identified as Pankaj Pathak, the youth was attacked by unidentified miscreants, probably followed by a road mishap at night.               Pathak's body was found beside a temple in the morning. His bike was also found near the body.

GNLA mayhem: 7 killed

Once again militants seem to have spread terror tentacles in Goalpara district bordering Meghalaya.        In a fresh orgy of attack, the Garo militants shot dead 6 people at Gendpara village on Sunday night. No breakthrough in Chirang abduction

Tension prevails in Chirang a day after unidentified miscreants kidnapped 4 persons of a family at gunpoint.           The incident took place at North Khaitema village on Saturday wee hours when gunmen  took away Tarun Basumatary, his wife and two sons at gunpoint.           Two other childrens, however managed to escape from the scene.        Search operation is in progress. But there seems to be hardly any breakthrough.

Magisterial probe into Azara killing

The Assam government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the recent incident in Azara where two women from Kokrajhar were found dead.      The duo were believed to have died under mysteriour circumstances and the bodies were recovered beside the railway track at Jogipara in the outskirt of Guwahati.         Additional district magistrate Biyaya Chaudhury would would probe the incident who is set to conduct a public hearing on November 8.

Kaziranga opens for tourists

Kaziranga opened for tourists on Friday.               Forest minister Rockybul Hussain opened the world heritage site in presence of many foreign and domestic tourists at a brief function in the morning. The Rabha Hasong dominated areas in Goalpara and South Kamrup continue to embroil in violence. The situation refuses to improve on Friday a day after the police firing in Goalpara where a youth died and several others have been injured.             Normal life remains crippled in these areas following the 12 hour bandh in protest against the Thursday's police firing. Dharna in front of NEDFi Bhawan

BTAD burning again

The brief silence is over. BTAD areas seem to have erupted in violence forcing the authority to clamp curfew on Thursday.     Violence took its worse turn during the 24 hour lower Assam bandh on Wednesday demanding exclusion of Non Boro areas from BTAD.      A string of group clashes marred the bandh call leaving two dead and several others injured.             The clashes broke out in Baska when a group of people forced some shops to open.
