Rabha-Hasong bandh cripples life in Goalpara and Kamrup

The 36 hour Rabha Hasong area bandh, which ends today paralysed the normal life in Rabha Hasong areas of Goalpara and Kamrup districts. The bandh was called by Rabha National Liberation Front or Rabha Jatiya Mukti Bahini (RJMB), a newly formed insurgent group earlier this year. The RJMB has called the bandh in protest against the government's failure to invite Rabha organizations to discuss their demand to incorporate RHAC areas in Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Commercial establishments, government and private offices in most areas of Goalpara district remained closed during the bandh. Hundreds of vehicles, especially long-distance trucks, remained stranded on NH-37, 62 and 51 due to the bandh. However, no untoward incidents were reported from any part of the area during the bandh.

On the other hand, in Goalpara, non-tribals under the aegis of Ana-Rabha Samannayrakhi Mancha burnt effigies of chief minister Tarun Gogoi, welfare of plain tribes minister Rajib Lochan Pegu and revenue minister Prithibi Majhi on Tuesday in protest against the state government's move to include many non-Rabha dominated areas in the RHAC.
