Along with the rest of the country the 67th Independence Day was observed peacefully at Nazira under the aegis of Nazira civil administration with a day-long programme. The ceremonial function was started from 8.15 in the morning at Nazira play ground. Etuwa Munda, state parliamentary secretary hoisted the National Flag at 9 AM. The event was attended by more than a thousand people at the Nazira Play Ground to salute the Tricolour and enjoy the Independence Day programme.

Talking to Assam Times, the CLP leader said a section of the people from Nagaland has been trying to grab plots on the territory of Assam in the name of the greater Nagalim. Veteran Congress leader in Nazira Tonkeshwar Saikia breath his last at his own residence of Nazira Simaluguri on Thursday. He was 81 and survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. Saikia, the elder brother of former Assam chief minister Hiteswar Saikia died of prolonged illness. Many political leaders, organizations and individuals have deeply condoled his death. On the occasion of the 68th Republic Day all citizens pf our country salute our National Flag and hoisted the Tricolour everywhere as a mark of Honour to it. But it is regret to say that due to the negligence of the teachers of the 310 No Molagaon government L.P. School of Nazira the Tricolour was lying down in the ground and latter Nazira administration recovered it with the police of Nazira police station.Investigation is going on in this regard but no case is registered for it in Nazira police station till today.

Despite the boycott appeals of several outfit organisations thousands of peoples were observed this Historic Day and participated in the Republic Day programmes. On the other hand, two bombs were blasted at Dholban and Bihubor of Nazira by suspected ULFA militants. No causality have been reported. Police tightened the security to nab the culprits.
