Rally against bad roads in Dima Hasao
Hundreds of students participate in the protest rally against bad road condition in Umrangso town in Dima Hasao on Friday 2 August '13. The protest rally was organised by SUBU(Save Umrangso Build Umrangso), DSU(Dimasa Students Union), KSA(Khelma Students Association), AABYSF(All Assam Bengali Youth Students Federation), NSU(Nepali Students Union), KSU(Karbi Students Union), DJH(Diyungmukh Jalai Hoshom) and other NGOs.
The protesters demanded immediate repair of Umrangso-Lanka road, Umrangso-Jowai road, Umrangso-Haflong road and other roads connecting the town with different parts of the district.
Speaking to the media, the president of SUBU said, “On behalf of the whole populace of Umrangso area we want to convey our griviences to His Excellency, J.B Patnaik, the Governor of Assam. We have listed all here what the problems of the people of the area, the sickly people, the old-aged people are because of the bad road condition. People are not sure whether they will reach Lanka or not; when we come to Umrangso from Lanka, we are not sure whether we will reach Umrangso or not.”
The protesters also blamed Dalmia Cement Company in Umrangso for plying heavy and overloaded vehicles on the already damaged roads. It is to be noted that construction work of Dalmia Cement is underway in the town.
A memorandum in this regard was submitted to the Governor of Assam, J.B Patnaik, through the officer-in-charge of Umrangso police station.

Scrutiny of nomination papers for election to 11th North Cacher Hills Autonomous council was done on Monday in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner and Returning officer Barun Bhuyan. The congress youth wing leader, Jivraj Daulagupu, on being denied the party ticket, has resigned from congress to contest the forthcoming 11th N.C Hills Autonomous Council election as an independent candidate. Speaking to the media persons, Daulagupu said that with heavy heart he would be contesting the coming election, scheduled to be held on 20 May 2013, from Haflong constituency. Speaking to the media persons Debojeet Thaosen, former CEM, expressed his hope that in the forthcoming election to the 11th N.C Hills Autonomous Council Ccongress(I) will come out with landslide victory. Observing the voting behaviour of the people, he said that some will vote for the party and some will vote for individuals; but most of the people will vote for the party- the hand symbol.Referring to other political parties in the race, he said that there is not a single opposition party to be seen which is strong enough to shake the concrete base of congress in the district. Therefore, there is no question why congress would not come back to power.
