Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. The 5 day long economic blockade against Nagaland is over.Protesters have withdrawn blockade on the National Highway 36 and 39 after the Nagaland government assured them that they would look into the demands.At least 11 local organizations blocked the roads in the hills district alleging aggression by a section of Nagaland miscreants.
A 12 hour Darrang bandh seems to have paralyzed normal life in the entire district on Thursday.Bandh supporters are trying to block the normal movement of vehicles by burning tyres on the National Highway from the morning.A section of the bandh supporters pelted stones at some vehicles forcing security forces to intervene with blank firing in Mongaodoi. At least 5 persons including journalist and policemen have been injured in the attack by bandh supporters.Assam Muslim Yuva Pariashad called the down to dusk bandh in protest against the Thursday’s group clash in Kalaigaon.
Once again one horn terror seems to have gripped Nagaon. A rhino that strayed from the Kaziranga National park creates no less panic among the local residents in Kaliabor on Friday.Villagers spotted the full grown animal in the open paddy field in the morning and informed the forest department.On lookers make it difficult for the rhino to find out a safe destination in the morning.  
BJP is all set to announce the poll candidates for Assam on March 8. Talking to Assam Times in New Delhi on Thursday evening, senior party leaders said that selection of candidates is in process.Despite disappointment from state party unit, the party is likely to leave Barpeta, Kaliabor, Lakhimpur and Dhubri to AGP.  But the regional party is not satisfied with the offer as AGP has bleak prospect in all these seats.   
State BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday charged Ranee Narah with trying to ignore his legal notice on the alleged deal with Pawan Singh Ghatowar.Talking to reporters in the sidelines of a function  at the party office, Sonowal said that he has not received an response from Narah on the legal notice.He, further, dared the Union minister to substantiate the allegations which is believed to have been kept at a pen drive.“I openly challenge her to show in public what is there in the pen drive,” said Sonowal.Narah recently alleged that Narah has evidence to prove that Sonowal accepted money to the tune of crores of rupees from Pawan Singh Ghatowar. Undeterred by the ongoing economic blockade, suspected miscreants from Nagaland unleashed a reign of terror in Karbi Anglong district again.The incident took place on Thursday in Dishapur area bordering Nagaland where suspected Naga miscreants set on fire five houses in a tiny Dimasa village. Various local organizations have condemned the miscreant activities in Dishapur.
In a significant development, AG and BJP have forged pre poll deal on Thursday. RAJU BARUAH FROM TEZPURShivaratri festivity seems to have gripped Tezpur on Thursday. The city of eternal romance is teeming with devotees and tourists as the Mahashivaratri got underway on Thursday.From early in the morning devotees of all ages were standing in queues in the Mahabhairav temple premises to offer pujas to the Lord Shiva. Tight security is in place in the entire town to ensure peace during the festival.The Shivaratri fair also is pulling huge crowd of tourists from the country and abroad. The festival will continue till Friday.
Rhino poaching strikes Kaziranga in Assam again. Yet another one horn rhino was killed by the poachers in the national park on Thursday hours after two poachers were killed in encounter with forest guards.A full grown rhino carcass was found in Burahpahar range of the national park on Thursday afternoon. The horn was missing.The incident took place hours after forest guards killed two poachers at an encounter in the world heritage site. The encounter took place in the Burapahar range where three others poachers are believed to have escaped.
The Centre has set up a panel to look into the separate Bodoland demands. Former Union home secretary GK Pillai would study the Bodoland demands.The decision was taken at a meeting between Union home ministry officials and BPF leaders in New Delhi on Thursday. The panel would submit its report by the next nine months.BPF leaders told Assam Times that they were happy with the decision and that the report would pave the way for a separate Bodoland.
