The notable increase in the literacy rate by 8.9 per cent than last decade and growth of sex ratio within age group of 0-6 are among the positive trends in the state as the final Primary Census Abstract of Assam 2011 was released on Thursday. However, there are several drawbacks in the report which includes the decline of workers in the agriculture sector.
Releasing the final Primary Census Abstract of Assam 2011 at Circuit House in the city on Thursday, Director of Census Operation, R K. Das said that this is the first set of final data from the Population Enumeration exercise held in February 2011.
Altogether 28 female children have increased in 2011 against 2001whereas India’s total rate shows a decrease of 8 girl children. With 962 female children against 1000 male Assam has been placed itself in the third position in the entire country just after Chhattisgarh (969) and Kerala (964). Altogether, Assam has 958 females per 1000 male in according to the 2011 census against 935 in 2001.
However, the matter of concern for the state is the decline of workers in agriculture sector. Altogether, the sector has 49.3 per cent of total workers witnessed a decline of 3 per cent in 2011. The cultivators alone were decreased by 5.2 per cent with 33.9 in 2011 against 39.1 in 2001.
“The data release contains list of indicators of Population, Density, Population (0-6), Scheduled Castes Population, Scheduled Tribes Population, Number of Literates, Number of Workers categorized as Total, Main, Marginal, Category of Economic Activity like Cultivators, Agricultural Labourers, Household Industry Workers, Other Workers and Non Workers” he added.
The data reveals an increase of 4,550,048 persons in absolute number of population in Assam during 2001-2011 with increase of 2,162,406 males and increase of 2,387,642 females.
Around 86% of the total population lives in rural areas and around 14% of total population lives in urban areas of Assam as per Census 2011.
Assam is ranked 15th position in terms of density in the country. In Assam, Kamrup ( Metro) is the most densely inhabited district with 1313 persons per sq. km. followed by Dhubri (896), Barpeta (742), Nalbari (733) & Nagaon (711) district. Whereas, the lowest density of population is reported from Dima Hasao with only 44 persons per sq.km.
Regarding number of females per 1000 males, highest sex ratio is observed in Baksa District (974) followed by Udalguri (973) and Chirang (969) and lowest Sex Ratio in Dima Hasao District (932) followed by Kamrup Metro (936) and Nalbari / Kamrup (969).
Census reveals that 16 numbers of ethnic groups are notified as Scheduled Castes and 25 numbers of ethnic groups as Scheduled Tribes in Assam with a variation of 22.2 percent increase of SC and 17.4 percent of ST than the last.
With a growth of 8.9 percent, Assam stands slightly ahead of the national literacy rate of 8.2 percent. Work Participation Rate (WPR) of the state at 38.36 percent is slightly lesser that the country rate of 39.8 percent but shows positive trend in the female WPR.
