Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Gogoi tables vote on account

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi tabled a vote of account on the floor of the House on Thursday.Gogoi, who holds the finance portfolio, has proposed a Rs 28,467 cr in the vote of account from April 1 to September 30.  But the vote on account is more than a full fledged budget in terms of soaps and promises just three months before the Lok Sabha polls.The chief minister has proposed more fund for 18 development boards apart from special funds for Rs 1,000 crore for the flood ravaged Dhemaji.  Gogoi could not tabled a  full fledged budget in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Modi to visit Silchar

Buoyed by the crowd in Khanapara, Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on February 22. HSLC exams begin

Over 2,83,000 candidates are appearing for the High School Leaving Certificate Examination and High Madrassa examination on Thursday.The examination has begun at 9 in the morning at altogether 833 centres across the state. The state board of secondary examination which conducts the examination has deployed over 2500 officials to ensure free and fair examination this time.Apart from the inspectors of schools, the supervisory panels set up by the SEBA this year has names of DC and SPs to deal with any irregularity and anomaly.  

Judges’ Field regained

The battle is over. The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has regained the Judges’ Field. A division bench of Chief Justice and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan in the judgment handed over the historic field to the district administration from the Guwahati Town Club on Wednesday.Notably, Guwahati Town Club claimed the field after the Government remained averse to allow Anna Hazare to hold a huge rally in the field last year.

Addl SP injured in clash

A senior police officer among 10 other securitymen have been injured in Cachar after they clashed with a group of protesters on the Silchar-Mizoram road on Wednesday.The incident took place at Lailapool where the local hundreds of local residents blocked the road demanding immediate withdrawal of a toll gate.When security forces tried to disperse them, the protesters turned violent and resorted to stone pelting leaving additional superintendent of police Dhruba Bora along with 12 other policemen injured. 20 injured in lathicharge

At least 20 people have been injured in Biswanath in Sonitpur district on Wednesday when security forces sprang upon a group of protesters who blocked the road in protest against a road mishap that left one person injured.The incident took place at 3 in the afternoon at Borgang area where local residents in large number blocked the road for three hours a speeding vehicle knocked down a person. Gogoi ridicules Modi

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi seems to have sharpened attack on Narendra Modi hardly a week after his Gujarat counterpart slammed him alleging lack of development initiative.Even during the discussion on governor’s address on the floor of the Assembly on Wednesday, Gogoi claimed to have done much more than Modi.He said,” Assam's growth is 13% in 2012-13. But Gujarat is satisfied with only 8.52%. Only Modi only has speed of speech where I have speed of development.” Gogoi said that Modi came to Guwahati and said that we have given jobs to only 10,000 people which was not true.
