Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

KLO militants freed in Nepal

In a bizarre case that embroils in mystery, Nepal police have released two dreaded KLO leaders 10 days after the duo were picked up.Identified as Tom Adhikary and Nilambor Singh, the most wanted militants were feed on Friday. Strangely, the West Bengal police are tightlipped on the controversy.The duo were picked up along the Indo-Nepal border on February 4.       

2 killed in road mishap

Two persons died and four others have been injured at a tragic road mishap in Tezpur on Saturday.The incident took place in the morning at Bihoguri area where the vehicle bound for Guwahati carrying them rammed into a post.Identified as Anowar Hussian, Ratan Biswas were killed on the spot while the injured have been rushed to the Tezpur Civil Hospital.

The Opposition on Friday came down heavily on the Tarun Gogoi government alleging utter lawlessness and rampant corruption in the state.Participating in the debate on the vote on account, AGP legislators have alleged that the government has failed on all fronts. “There is nothing in the vote on account that can cheer the common,” said the AGP legislators.According to the AIUDF legislators, the vote on account has full of promises to woo the voters in the time of Lok Sabha polls. Elephant terror revisits Demow

A hard of wild elephants has been unleashing a reign of terror in Demow during the last couple of days.One person was trampled to death by wild elephants on Friday night sending shock and anger against the forest department in the entire area.The incident took place at Chitolia where wild elephants trampled to death a local villagers Rajen Doley at night.Local residents told Assam Times that despite repeated appeal the forest department has done precious little to curb the menace.

BJP panel submits report

The BJP panel set up to probe the voting anomaly in the Rajya Sabha poll submitted its findings on Friday.Senior BJP leaders told Assam Times that the report was submitted before the state party president Sarbananda Sonowal for action against the legislator who intentionally got his vote cancelled. The panel is tightlipped on the findings.Led by senior leader Mison Ranjan Das, the three member panel grilled all the five legislators to fine out the truth behind the allegations. They include Parasanta Phukan, Ranjit Dutta, Jadav Deka, Manoranjan Das and Dilip Moran.

Assamese trader abducted in M’laya

Suspected GNLA militants kidnapped two businessmen from West Garo hills district in Meghalaya on Friday.According to information, four armed youths whisked the duo away from Gaattuli area on their way back from the market in the afternoon. Meghalaya police have launched rescue operations . But there is no trace of the businessmen hailing from Assam. Details are awaited.    

AIUDF names 2 candidates

The All India United Democratic Front on Friday has announced candidates for two seats for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Senior party leaders told Assam Times that Bijoy Krishna Nath will contest from Silchar seat while Radheshyam Biswas has been fielded in Karimganj seat.

Teacher accountability commission

Beware teachers. Dispur is contemplating a panel of experts to ensure accountability of teachers.Disclosing this education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters at a function Ravindra Bhawan that the government would soon set up teacher accountability commission to ascertain the penalty of erring teachers.The commission would comprise at least three former vice chancellors, said Dr Sarma.
