New bamboo species to Dima Hasao

The Founder and Executive Director of SABF and Former President of World Bamboo Organization (WBO)  Shri Kamesh Salam Gifted two species of bamboo to the Forest Department of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council on March 12 at Halflong.

The Chief Conservator of Forest, Dima Hasao, Shri Bikash Barhma, IFS, CCF received the two species “Dendrocalamus asper black” also known as Bambu Petaung hitam in Indonesia and an important species of Indonesia and “Guadua angustifolia” a bamboo popular and known for its strength and utility in Latin America in presence of Borsing Bey, DFO and Nilomani Morol, DFO. Both the species are tissue cultured at Bambu Nusa Verde (BNV), which is Asia’s leading supplier of bamboo planting stock, and provides services and solutions for sustainable forestry and bamboo industries. P.T. Bambu Nusa Verde (BNV) is a biotechnology company specialized in the micro propagation of bamboo species. Head office and production facilities are located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. BNV is technically supported by Oprins in Belgium, and production system applies the tissue culture protocols developed by Oprins for numerous tropical bamboo species.  The Dima Hasao district of Assam being one of the largest growers of bamboo in India will benefit by growing and propagating this highly valued commercial species. Mr. Bikash Brahma appreciated the gesture of SABF in promoting bamboo in South Asia particularly introducing bamboo linkage in ASEAN region and taking the ideas of Look East Policy with Bamboo Bridge.
