64th Republic Day celebrated at Haflong

The 64th Republic Day was celebrated at Haflong with a daylong programme at N L Daolagupu Sports Complex at Haflong in presence of huge gatherings on Saturday. Debojeet Thaosen, Chief Executive Member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council hoisted the National tri-colour in presence of several Executive Members, Members of DHAC and government officials.

Attending the ceremony as the Chief Guest Sri Thaosen inspected the march past by 5th AP Bn, Home Guards, NCC, Scout & Guide and contingents from schools etc. In his speech, Thaosen said ‘Our constitution speaks of empowerment of the grassroots. When other parts of the country had panchayati system, our council had introduced village council system even long before the panchayati raj system introduced in India. Now with active initiatives of our team and the present Governor of Assam we are going to introduce a better village council system on the lines of Panchayati system.’ – The major difference being election rather than selection. Thus we will be empowering the grassroots in a better and more adequate way than ever before with direct flow of benefits to the grassroots and the aspiring leaders at the grassroots will have a chance to experience governance.’ ‘ Our council has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, in order to prevent such events in future and to bring in transparency in the entire system we have introduced complete computerisation system connecting all the departments electronically, thus we became the first Autonomous Council to have introduced such system.’

Detailing the steps taken by the Autonomous Council for the all round development of the district through the all most all the departments, CEM disclosed that departments like Education, Health Care, sports, veterinary etc. have shown remarkable improvement and achievements. Further he said they still have the salary problem in the normal sector of the council. They are actively working out with the government of Assam to find out a permanent solution to this grave problem. The adopted ROP will be implemented very soon once the internal technicalities are sorted out, he assured.

All most all the communities living in N. C. Hills performed their traditional dance on the occasion.
