ERDF felicitates senior citizens

Every year the Education Research and Development Foundation (ERDF) honors eminent personalities of the state in recognition of their contribution in different fields to mark the advent of New Year. This year ERDF selected some senior citizens of the state to wish good health and long life so that they can continue their service to the society.

The 2013 edition of the felicitation programme was held at the Regional Institute of Science & Technology (RIST) for ten senior citizens. The function began with welcome address of the dignitaries to the Dais by N I Laskar, Director, Corporate Communication ERDF. Dr H K Baruah, Director (Academics), ERDF welcomed the guests. Felicitation of guests began with Nirupama Borgohain, Abdul Mazeed, Prof. Md. Taher, Abdul Malik , H N Das, Abdul Khaleque Mazumder, B K Nath, D N Barua, Hareswar Das and D N Singh.

Dr N K Choudhury, Principal Adviser, ERDF addressed the dignitaries followed by Dr A C Bhagabati, former Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University A.P

Nirupama Borgohain released two books, namely, ‘Janmadin’ authored by Dr Dinesh Baishya and ‘Paloiya-Pathar’ by Devajit Saikia. Later on the dignitaries expressed their views and the functions concluded after vote of thanks by N I Laskar.

The Education Research and Development Foundation is the largest institutional network in the Northeastern region catering education from KG to PG by running two CBSE affiliated schools, two professional colleges viz. Central IT College and Regional College of Higher Education, one engineering college Regional Institute of Science & Technology and one University, the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya.

Altogether 8 people died in a spell of thunder and lightning that rocked the state on Wednesday morning. The first lightning death took place in Dudhnoi where a school girl lost her life. Lightning struck her when he was fetching water from a well. She was rushed to the hospital but was declared brought dead. The second incident struck at Dhupdhara where a youth died besides leaving his seriously injured. Three other people died at Bhimakuchi tea garden in Udalguri where thunder and lightning struck on them in the morning. Severe dust storm forced a Jetlite flight from Guwahati-Dibrugarh to be diverted back to the state capital on Wednesday. The pilot could not land at Mohanbari airport . The Delhi-Guwahati-Dibrugarh flight S2391 was scheduled to land at Mohanbari at 1.30 pm. But, as a severe dust storm reduced visibility in the area , the plane had to be diverted back to Guwahati. Revenue and Labour Minister Prithibi Majhi who was also in the plane.
The Centre has issued an advisory to the Assam Government and neighbouring states to be on alert in the run-up to the ULFA Raising Day on April 7. According to information, the home ministry has inputs that anti-talk factions of ULFA may try to create blockades and law and order situations in the area as their leaders have directed their cadres to execute plans to create disturbances and disrupt normal life in the region. The security forces in the area have also been kept on alert to thwart any plans by ULFA.
A hardcore militant of anti-talk faction group of National Democratic Front of Bodoland surrendered before the security forces in Udalguri on Tuesday. According to information, the militant named Deepjyoti Boro deposited one US made 9 mm pistol, one magazine, four round of live ammunition. He joined the outfit in 2009. The militant was involved in various unlawful activities in Udalguri, Baska, Nalbari, Goalpara, Morigaon district.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to visiting Assam on April 20. During his day long visit, Dr Singh will inaugurate the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The Assam Legislative Assembly will observe its 75 years celebration as on the PM’s new schedule. Singh was supposed to visit in Guwahati on April 7. But his schedule was deferred for undisclosed reason.
A six week Hardware Maintenance and Networking program was successfully come to an end in Kakojan College on last March 31. The Ahmedabad Indian Institute of Management on Tuesday presented before Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi the blueprint of a roadmap for Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management for making it a Centre of Excellence. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Gogoi asked his ministers and officials to prepare district-level plans to deal with the draught-like situation in the state. The instruction came up when Gogoi held a meeting of senior members of his ministry to deal with the drought-like situation in Assam. He stressed the need for taking water conservation efforts in all commercial and residential areas in view of the lack of proper rainfall.
