In protest against the proposed extension of the term of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council& in demand of holding the Autonomous Council election in time, the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) Dima Hasao District Committee, Haflong & Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Dima Hasao District Committee, Haflong staged Dharna in front the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Dima Hasao on Tuesday.
They were shouting ‘no extension, hold election’ etc. etc
Later they submitted a memorandum the Governor of Assam thorugh the Deputy Commissioner detailing the grievances and the demands of the people of Dima Hasao.
They requested the Governor of Assam to disallow the extension of the term of the present Executive Committee of Dima Hsao Autonomous Council (DHAC) in which the validity of the five -year term of office with respect to them being as elected members expire in December 2012, nor to let the Council be run under the Hon'ble Governor's rule without immediately issuing the notification for the election even in the case of dissolution of the Council and (ii) to hold the general election to Autonomous Council in Dima Hasao district immediately. It was stated that it was high time the Govt. issued the notification for the election before the expiry of the term of the DHAC, as the five year term of office in respect of the existing elected members of the Council is going to expire in December, 2012. But the government has still not set the date for the election to Autonomous Council in Dima Hasao district. In fact, Dima Hasao district has been subjected to deprivations not-only in the field of socio-economic, educational, cultural and other aspects but also even on the democratic rights as it has been a regular feature that the Council elections in Dima Hasao District have been delayed.
The NC Hills Indigenous Students' Forum shall be compelled to call for 100 hours or even indefinite NC Hills Bandh in the near future, unless their prayer was given a due consideration by the authority concerned as they are demanding the bifurcation of NC Hills district into two Autonomous Districts under the provision of 3(c) 3 of Articles 244(2)...
