NSCN (IM) cadre nabbed at Haflong

The swift action by Haflong based Assam Rifles HQ and Assam Police have resulted in a big blow to NSCN (IM) when its Dima Hasao District area Kingpin Self Styled Major Cleanson was apprehended from Lodhi Basti, Haflong on 25 Nov 12. A pistol, ammunition and a Chinese grenade was also recovered from the militant. The militant has been identified as the mastermind in many cases of kidnapping , extortions etc including recent IED blast near Mahur on 21 Nov and killing of an Assam Police constable at Haflong on 24 Nov (sketch of the killing site has also been recovered). As per inputs, banned Naga militant outfit NSCN (IM) has been trying to directly control subversive activities in Dima Hasao District and Jenam Valley after the signing of Dimasa Accord. Reports also suggest that NSCN (IM) is using proxies like IPF and DJNA to further its extortion, illegal “tax” collection activities and to retain influence in the area.

NSCN (IM) is involved in kidnapping, extortions and all sorts of illegal activities in the Dima Hasao and Jenam valley area. Its nexus with other groups like DNRF and DJNA has also been surfacing from time to time. During last few months the operations at Nrianam, Mailubra, Mongjang, Baladhan and Haflong of Dima Hasao District conducted by Maibong based Army Unit and Haflong garrison Assam Rifles unit have degraded the NSCN (IM) set up in Dima Hasao District by eliminating NSCN (IM) top notch Self Styled officer cadres and apprehension of many other cadres. The pressure to act and retrieve its image was evident on the militant group when its OGW had to return the extortion money to villagers in Mahur area.

The apprehension is a result of massive hunt for the perpetrators of the recent IED blast near Mahur targeting army troops and killing of an Assam Police constable at Haflong on 24 Nov 12. The close coordination between the Army Units, Assam Rifles and Assam Police remained key to the success of the operation. The security forces are hot on the trail of the remaining suspects and confident of nabbing them as they are getting information from the villagers who see the activities of the Naga outfit as inimical to the recent peace process in the District, stated a press release.
