A UGC sponsored national seminar on the Problems of Industrial Labourers in Assam was held in ADP College, Nagaon on September 28-29. The seminar was inaugurated on Sep 28 by Dr Narayan Ch Barman, President of Governing Body by lighting lamp. Dr Sarifuddin Ahmed, Principal of ADP College welcomed the guests and scholars. Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, Working President of the Seminar Organizing Committee dedicated the seminar to the hallowed memory of Anandaram Dhekial Phookan who was the pioneer of economic analysis in Assamese literature.
Prof Nirankar Srivastav, Dean, School of Social Science, North Eastern Hills University presented the key note address. He highlighted the problems of industrial labourers and stressed on proper implementation of legislations made to safeguard their interests. Prof P. Nayak of Dept of Economics, NEHU was the guest of honour. He drew attention to the unorganized sector, whose issues are generally ignored by the planners.
70 research papers were submitted by scholars, associate professors and assistant professors from different colleges and universities of Assam in the two day long seminar. There were some participants from outside Assam too. These were presented in six technical sessions. The themes of these technical sessions were tea garden labourers, child labourers, women labourers, globalization, socio-economic problems and general problems of industrial labourers. These sessions were chaired by Prof Nirankar Srivastav, Prof P. Nayak, Prof Sarat Ch Kakati and Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti.
The valedictory session was attended by Prof Sarat Ch Kakati, Head of Dept of Statistics, Dibrugarh University. He dwelt on the importance of Statistics in economic analysis. Habibur Rahman, Vice Principal of ADP College also was present. Joy Kumar Singha offered vote of thanks.
The Dept of Economics and Dept of Statistics of ADP College were the joint organizers of the national seminar. It was collaborated by the Nagaon office of the Dept of Economics and Statistics, Govt of Assam. Arati Bharali, Assistant Professor of Dept of Economics compered the seminar. Associate Professors Joy Kumar Singha and Kakali Boruah were the co-ordinators of the UGC sponsored national seminar. Selected papers of this seminar will be published in book format, the organizers have informed.
