Aggrieved people block NH-37 at Raha

Movement of All kinds of vehicle on National Highway-37 were completely disrupted for over two and half hours today when the residents of Raha irritated by the abysmally slow progress of work of the four-lane East-West Corridor, blocked the highway on Thursday. The blockade was called by the Raha unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Tiwa Students’ Union (TSU) , with total response from the affected people of the area.

Thousands of people and students community blockaded the Highway at 11:00 am by standing on the middle of the road shouting slogans against Madhukon Construction and National Highway Authority of Nagaon district not only for their negligence in speeding up the construction work but also for sub-standard construction work of four-lanned highway at Raha.

According to information received by the Assam Tribune, the local people, several times, had requested Madhukon Construction Company engaged in the work of the particular stretch of the highway and the National Highway Authority of India, Nagaon district ( NHAI ) to repair the existing highway or subways first so as to allow the people to use it, but to no avail. The plight of the highway at that stretch often leads to accidents. Life is a veritable hell there. When it rains, the highway literally turns into a gutter, and when there is sunshine for a few days, the dusty air makes life miserable.
