33rd Assam Convention of North America

Somewhere, a wall of mountains, frames the western horizon, where mighty waters follow their inevitable course, where crisp clean air rolls in from thick alpine forests, where tall prairie grasses bend gently in the breeze, there is a spirit, there is a welcome, there is a place called "Calgary" . It is the heart of the new west in North America. A fast growing city in the province of Alberta, Canada. On July 30th & July 1st 2012 more than 200 people came from different parts of the world including all over Canada, US¸ New Zealand and India. This convention at hotel Sheraton Cavalier was an International affair, the 33rd major social event of the Assamese community living in North America.


During the convention, ladies flaunted their gorgeous mekhela-sadors, gents with kurta- pajamas, even some small children with muga dresses. The tea-breaks became the meeting and greeting grounds for all. Everyone relished the pitha, narikolor-laru, sira-badam bhoja, cake and many other things prepared by the Calgarians served with other Indian snacks.



Some of the highlights from our agenda were the "Assam Forum" which consisted presentations on developing issues related to Assam and its people. It was a platform of open discussions that led to generation of very fruitful ideas and options. There was exchange of information on projects and initiatives on various aspects like social, health and wellness, tourism, communication, and community projects.


There was then the inauguration of the convention by retd IAS officer from Shillong, Mr Pritish Chakravarty who declared the convention open. The lighting of the lamp was done by Honorable Minister of Services Alberta Mr. M. Bhullar and the gathering was addressed by ANNA and host committee presidents. A borgeet presented by our guest artist from India Bornali Kalita.


A tribute to the legend Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and his life achievements by his son Tez Hazarika, his sister from Edmonton Stuti Patel and other friends and family members namely Mr Proskow, Enajori, Arati Baruah, Ruma Barua, Arpita Gogoi . Then there was the release of Souvenir Magazine "Pragya" by the host committee and "Luitor pora missisippi loi" by Assam Association of North America ( ANNA ).


After the inauguration, the cultural show started with Chorus Competition dedicated to Canada's beloved Assamese singer "Late Anima Chakraborty". The evening shows items like assamese and indian songs, bihu, modern, western, bollywood, satriya dances, recitations. Calgarian children delivered an outstanding performance through a assamese skit "Bilati Pitha", later the popular item "Fashion Show" provided lot of entertainment and fun. There was also the screening of the Kamal Rajat winning assamese film by Manju Bora "Akashi Torar Kotha". Students and teachers of Assamese School of Language and Performing Arts, Calgary thrilled the audience with a comedy drama "Calgarir Kolaguri".



Visiting guest singers and artists from Assam stole the hearts of all the people with their brilliant and remarkable performance. Bornali Kalita with her captivating, fresh voice brought the crowd to feet with her assamese, hindi and english songs. Another loved, promising singer from Assam, Dikshu proved his talent with his popular numbers. The crowd applauded the energy and confidence of both these young artist and thanked them for the memorable moments.



Every aspect of the Convention was splendid the food, the decor, the attitude the event needs special mention and the involvement and participation of the local youth was just amiable.
This Assam Convention 2012, in Calgary made every Assamese proud and proved that our rich culture, tradition is here to stay and its spirit is sure to spread all over the world.

Powerful explosion Tinsukia:20 injured

Atleast 20 people have been injured when ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Tinsukia. The incident took place at 7 in the evening in Doomdoma where ULFA militants lobbed the powerful grenade at a police outpost which exploded with a huge sound. Notorious police officer arrested in Guwahati

Morigaon police have arrested a police officer in connection with a number of sensational cases. Identified as Bhaktiran Kakoti, the suspended police officer was arrested from room no 306 of the games village complex in Guwahati in the wee hour by a team of Morigaon. Kakoti has a number of criminal cases pending against him in several police stations. He was suspended a couple of months and yet he openly criticized the DGP.

NCPR panel visits refugee camps

A three member panel of the national commission for protection of rights visited the relief camps in Kokrajhar on Tuesday and took stock of the plight of the affected children. Led by its chairperson Shanta Sinha, the team visited the camps at Gambaribil and Tulsibil where thousands of children have been languishing in the refugee camps. Talking to reporters at the Kokrajhar Circuit House, Sinha deplored that the plight of the affected children has not been taken into consideration during the stock—taking visits of the various delegations. Anticipatory bail for BPF MLA

A BPF MLA was among the 14 people who procured anticipatory bail from the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday in connection with an ethnic clash that killed 5 refugees in Chirang district recently. The BPF MLA is Kamal Singh Narzary who was allegedly involved in the incident where five refugees were killed by miscreants when they were shifted to another camp in Amguri area. Others include Bodo Women Justice Forum chairperson Anjali Daimary. Cases have been registered against them with Bijni police station. Bijni police have also registered a case against BPF MLA Pramila Rani Brahma who is yet to move the court.

Mild earthquake strikes North East

An earthquake of mild intensity struck the state on Tuesday triggering panic among the people of Guwahati and parts of the north-eastern region. The quake with a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale, rocked the region at 1:13 noon. The epicentre of was in Morigaon district. There was, however, no report of damage to life or property. There are also reports of tremors being felt in some parts of the north-east region.

White paper on NRC issue by Oct 1

Dispur is preparing a white paper on steps to check infiltration in the state. According to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the white paper would be published by October 1 to throw some lights of the steps on the issue. Taking a jibe at AGP and BJP, Gogoi dared them to come out with a white paper. He said that AGP, BJP AASU talked of yet another agitation to expel illegal immigrants. But I do dare them to reveal what they did to solve the problem.

No ban on rallies, clears CM

The state government has not imposed ban on processions, demonstration and dharnas in the state. Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Tuesday, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that he only requested political parties and organizations to refrain from holding demonstrations and dharnas fearing fresh any violence.Gogoi’s comment assumes significance after his appeal drew flak from the various outfits who called the situation an undeclared emergency.

AIUDF takes BJP MLA to court

Opposition AIUDF on Tuesday threatens to sue BJP MLA Prashanta Phukan for calling the party president Badruddin Ajmal as a Bangladeshi. In a statement party general secretary and MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Kasimi said that he found it hard to believe how Phukan can call Ajmal a Bangladeshi. He said that his party would demand an explanation from him. Notably, the BJP MLA from Dibrugarh, called Ajmal an immigrant at an interview with a local TV channel.

Normalcy in BTAD areas: Gogoi

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi claimed to have improved the over all situation BTAD areas and Dhubri. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Tuesday, Gogoi said that around 2.42 lakh displaced people have returned to their homes. He said that there has been no new fresh incident of violence during the last few days.He said that the next meeting of the coordination committee would be held at Kokrajhar on September 6.
