Lawyers in Golaghat have joined the two-day nation-wide strike beginning from today, called by Bar Council of India (BCI) against the government's Higher Education and Research (HER) Bill aimed at usurping its control over the legal education. Members of Golaghat Bar Association staged a sit in demonstration in Bar premise against the draft of Higher Education and Research Bill 2011 which excludes legal education from the purview of the Bar Council of India. The Bar Council of India (BCI), the apex body representing 1.7 million lawyers in India is opposing certain provisions of the Draft Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011 and other connected bills which may have an adverse effect on the hitherto autonomous functions of the BCI and the universities providing legal education. Addressing the protestors, Golaghat Bar Association President Mrinal Buragohain said that the proposed Bill predicts the formation of a National Commission comprising academicians and others to look into the legal education. The National Commission will deprive the representative of Bar Council to have their say while forming the policies on legal education, he said. Extending their support to the BCI's call, Golaghat Bar Association Secretary Tridib Bezbarua said, "As its BCI's call to abstain from work, so all the lawyers are supporting it. As of now we are on strike even tomorrow." The protestors also opposed ‘National accreditation regulatory authority for higher educational institution Act 2010,’ ‘The foreign educational institution regulation of entry and operation Bill 2010,’ ‘The prohibition of unfair practices in higher educational institution Bill 2010’ ‘The National Law Schools Bill 2011’ Later the members of Golaghat Bar Association also burnt the copies of Higher Education and Research (HER) Bill

After days of will-they-won’t-they, police have arrested Akhil Gogoi on Sunday in connection with the recent protest in Kaziranga.
