Demanding adequate security to the business community of Haflong in particular and of entire Dima Hasao in general, the Haflong Merchants’ Association organised a protest rally at Haflong on Wednesday. The members of Haflong Merchants’ Association took out a procession with the dead body of Swapan Dhar Chaudhury, a renowned merchant of Haflong who was killed by miscreants on Tuesday.
The rally started from Haflong Civil Hospital reached the very shop of late Swapan Dhar Chaudhury then marched through the Haflong town reached at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Dima Hasao. Hundreds of people including senior citizens of Haflong demanded immediate and adequate security to them otherwise they would be compelled to keep their establishments closed for indefinite period. The people also shouted slogans like ‘DC murdabad’ ‘district administration murdabad’ etc.
The agitating people criticised the role of district administration and police administration for utter failure to check such kidnap, extortion and killing of innocent people in the district even after providing proper information to the police and administration.
Following the killing of Swapan Dhar Chaudhury, a renowned businessman of Haflong, tension was running high when hundreds of businessmen of Haflong came on the street keeping their respective business establishment closed protesting the killing.
Unidentified gunmen shot at one Swapan Dhar Chaudhury, (Paltu) aged 56 owner of Rajiv Automobiles (Motor parts) just in front of his residence at about 8.05 PM on Tuesday, when Dhar Chaudhury was returning from his shop with his son Rajiv. He was rushed to Haflong Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injury.
Mention may be made here with the deteriorating of law & order in the district, people of Dima Hasao has lost confidence utterly on the district administration.
Meanwhile, several social and political organisations including ASDC etc. of Dima Hasao strongly condemned the killing of businessman.
