PWD engineers and contractor beaten by flood affected people
The irate flood affected people of Ranthali near Kalaigaon town physically assulted PWD officials of Udalguri Division namely Harekrishna Sarma,Asstt. Engineer; Tilak Sarma JE and one PWD contractor Hemchandra Daimari at 8.30 AM on June 28 near a flood damaged bridge at Ranthali. People also pushed down all the vehicles of the officials and contractors (one Maruti Alto, one Maruti 800 and one Honda Glamour bike) in to the deep flood water.
According to information the construction of RCC bridge at Gerua at the cost of Rs.6,42,89033/- on six and half KM long Ojagaon -Kalaigaon PWD road had started on November 26, 2008. But only twenty percent of the work has been completed during these three years, causing misery to people of several villages. The recent flood in Kalaigaon Revenue Circle nearly damaged the temporary weak foot bridge.Even the incomplete RCC bridge developed a few cracks. The stranded people including students started gathering at the site since morning of June 28. When the officials and contractors had arrived at the site irate people started arguing with them resulting the incident. Irate people also gheraod Pabitra Kumar Das, BDO, Kalaigaon who had arrived at the site half an hour later. All the injured officials and contractor had been hospitalised.

In a tragic accident four persons namely -Siddique Ali (23) of Kalaigaon; Bijoy Rajbongshi (35), Hari Rajbongshi (30) and Gauranga Mondol (43) of Dimakuchi under Dimakuchi police station died in a tragic mishap to day at around 3.30 PM. More than hundred wild elephants attacked the Central Nursery of forest department at Switch Gate near Compartment No.4.inside Khalingduar Reserve Forest in Udalguri district last night causing extensive damage to the buildings and walls under construction. Interestingly,a few wild elephants had been roaming in the nursery the previous night on May 14.In order to chase them away forest personal resorted to firing causing minor injury to some of the herd.Being teased that way all the wild elephants numbering more than hundred attacked forest personal in retaliation forcing them to retreat to the range office.
