First conference of Goalpara District Press Club held
The first general conference of the newly formed District Press Club, Goalpara was held on Sunday with a day-long programme at Assam Club, Goalpara. The programme was started in the morning with the flag hoisting by Syed Rabiul Haque, president, District Press Club, Goalpara and smriti tarpan by and Abdur Rauf, senior journalist, respectively. At 11 am, the general meeting was held in which several topics of journalism were discussed.
Noted journalist Dilip Kumar Sharma said the journalist should take always active role in any kind of social problems. The newly elected body took their charge from the organizing committee from the same meeting. Later in the afternoon, the open session presided over by Syed Rabiul Haque, president of the club, was held. Attending as the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner Pritam Saikia, after inaugurating the open session said that the journalism has a great role in the development of the society. He also urged the journalist to be true and honest in journalism.
Participating in the session both Madhusudan Das, noted artitst and Sukracharya Rabha, noted youth dramatist confessed how media helped them in their respective field of activites. Several journalists from various parts of the district participated in the conference.

The 36 hour Rabha Hasong area bandh, which ends today paralysed the normal life in Rabha Hasong areas of Goalpara and Kamrup districts. The bandh was called by Rabha National Liberation Front or Rabha Jatiya Mukti Bahini (RJMB), a newly formed insurgent group earlier this year. Eight organizations, including the Goalpara district units of AASU, ARSU, ABSU, ABYF and Sikshak Samanay Samiti, have called a 12-hour Goalpara district bandh on Wednesday from 6 am in protest against the killing of the two teachers – Kameswar Rabha and Sarit Rabha – after their alleged abduction by the suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA). Almost 47 days since the two were abducted, their bodies were recovered from Kasumari Pahar near Krishnai on June 30.
