Gogoi meets Baalu, discusses road projects

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi called on Union minister of shipping, road transport and highways, Thiru T.R. Baalu here on Tuesday and discussed the issues relating to road development in the state.

According to information, Mr Baalu directed NHAI to take up repair work from Khanapura to Jorabat and Jorabat to Nagaon on top priority and requested the Mr Gogoi to expedite the work relating to the acquisition of land, cutting of trees and shifting of utilities for the progress on East-West corridor.

He proposed diversion of about 90 km on the stretches of NH 37, which has to be 4-laned by NHAI to avoid Kaziranga National Park and offered in alternative route on NH-52 between Tezpur and Gohpur.

He assured the Chief Minister that a team of senior officials would be sent to Guwahati to sort this out in consultation with the State Government officials.

The minister directed the Ministry officials to expedite sanction of the estimate submitted by the State Government regarding Moran-Naharkatia road at 57 km under CRF at a cost of Rs. 50 crore.

Mr Gogoi proposed the remaining 10 district headquarters to improve the connectivity by 2-lane roads.

He also requested the construction of bridges over river Lohit, Dibong and Dihang alongwith development of NH-52 in Arunachal Pradesh to interconnect NH-37 and NH-52.

He assured to look into the matter. The Chief Minister proposed that a 300 years old bridge at Namdang Silor Shako may be retained and 4-laning of the corresponding stretch of NH-37 may be done by constructing a bypass. He also sought enhancement of funds to Rs. 17.5 crore (against Rs. 5 crore) to repair the flood damages during 2007-08 and Rs. 10 crore for restoration of damages.

He further assured that the matter will considered subject to overall availability of funds. Thiru Baalu assured the Chief Minister that the NHAI has been directed to prepare proper design for the development of junction at Jalukbari and assured efficient traffic circulation on all the connecting arms of the roads.

The Assam Government is to acquire land for construction of diversion of Guwahati University and thereafter the project will be considered for sanction.

Properties worth several lakh have been reduced to ashes when a massive fire broke out in Guwahati on Monday. Initially, the fire broke out at a shop in Junali area which later spread to the adjacent shops. Five fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the flames. The reason is yet to be ascertained but according to preliminary report the fire originated from the electric short circuit.
Security forces in Tinsukia district recovered a huge cache of explosives on Sunday. Acting on a tip off army and police raided a house in Laila Dhulijan where a huge cache of explosives were recovered. These include 3 bottle grenades and 12 detonetor sticks along 2 KG RDX, 2 Chinese grenades. The explosives were recovered after security forces arrested an ULFA militant in the area.
In a bizarre incident that runs into a statewide shockwave, a woman allegedly hacked to death her husband during a quarrel over his persistent drinking habit in Sibsagar district on Sunday. The incident took place early on Sunday, when Lalita Chettri attacked her husband, who was in his early 40s, with an axe after the couple had an argument over the husband's drinking habit.
