A mammoth security arrangement is on the cards to ensure free and fair election for the North Cachar Hills District Council.
According to information, the authorities have chalked a detailed plan of action in respect of duties to be carried out by the election machinery prior to, during and after the polls.
Sixteen cells are functioning round the clock to ensure a free and fair election process with the polls slated for November 26 and December 1.
NC Hills Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Anil Kumar Baruah and Election Officer L Zovi Nampul are closely monitoring the poll preparation in view of the deteriorating law and order scenario.
Mr Baruah is holding several rounds of meetings with the candidates, political parties, apex bodies of various communities, zonal magistrates and sector officers of both the civil and police administration and departmental heads for smooth conduct of the poll.
The returning officer urges all the political parties and candidates to maintain distance and not to have any nexus with extremists and anti social elements for political gain.
He also warned the candidates or political parties that action would be taken against them if such alliances is detected.
He further appealed to all the officials and political parties to strictly follow the Model Code of Conduct while directing the zonal magistrate and the sector officers.
Deputy Commissioner and and superintendent of police Deepak Kedia also assured that sufficient number of security force personnel would be pressed into poll duty to make the process free and fair.
The Election Control Room and the Information, Publicity & Media Cell have already are functioning round the clock.
Altogether 78 candidates are in the fray in 27 constituencies on NC Hills Autonomous Council. Of these, 27 candidates are from the Indian National Congress, 17 are from ASDC, 10 from BJP and the remaining 24 candidates are Independent.
Seventeen-Garampani witness the highest number of candidates in any constituency which is 5. In 12 constituencies there will be straight contest.
Significantly this time, 2 women candidates, one from the BJP and another independent, are contesting in council election.
