Silghat-Guwahati passenger train blockade by AASU at Raha demanding stoppage

In protest against the non-fulfillment of their long standing demand, the All Assam Students’ Union ( AASU ) , Raha unit along with several other organisations staged a peaceful train-blockade from 8 am to 9.30 am at Raha railway station on Saturday. About four hundred people took part in the blockade and stopped the movement of the Silghat-Guwahati passenger train for more than over 1 hour.


The Raha unit of the students’ union has earlier called upon the Railway authority to sanction a brief stop for the Silghat-Guwahati passenger train at Raha railway station, for the greater interest of the traders, students, office-goers of the Raha town is now dejected over the indifferent attitude of the concerned authority.


Talking to this correspondent, Mridul Hazarika, president, AASU , Nagaon district said,” We submitted a memorandum to the Railway authority on 7 January 2011 but no action has been taken by the concerned authority even after one year passing by. This bounded us to take the decision of train blockade today.”


He also pointed out that‘ If the train is stopped at Raha,it will benefit the passengers of Raha travelling to Guwahati everyday because they all need to pay additional 20 Rs. as autorikshaw fare to catch the train at Chaparmukh station.”


Meanwhile, Bhakarjyoti Bordoloi, Inspector ( Commercial ) of Lumding Division arrived at the spot and negotiated with the agitators and assured a discussion with the higher officials within a week.


On the other hand the agitators informed that if the railway authorities fail to fulfill their demand within a week then they will go for an indefinite rail blockade soon.


The AASU was also supported by Tiwa Students’ Union and AJYCP Raha unit members besides the local people in the train blockade programme today.
