Train service hit by blockade at Sarupathar

In protest against the non-fulfillment of their long standing demand, the Sarupathar Chambers of Commerce along with several other organisations staged a rail blockade agitation at Sarupathar railway station on Thursday. About four hundred people staged a blockade from around 4 am in the morning and block Brahmaputra Mail (up) for more than over three hours. The traders’ body and people of Sarupathar have been long since demanding stoppage of long distance trains like Kamakhya Express, Jana Shatabdi Express, Chennai Express etc. Meanwhile D. Das, Manager (Commercial) of Lumding Division and Debeswar Bora SDO(Civil) arrived at the spot and negotiated with the agitators and assured granting immediate stoppage of Kamakhya Express within 10 days, whereas, as far as the other trains are concerned the railway authorities are likely to arrive at a positive decision within 15th March. On the other hand the agitators informed that if the railway authorities failed to fulfill their demands within March 15 then they will go for an indefinite rail blockade from April 1.

Among the trains affected due to the blockade were the Up and Down Brahmputra Mail, Janshatabdi Express and Kamakhya Express as they were detained at various places along the route and as a result of the blockade these trains are running nearly several hours behind schedule.
