Suspected ULFA rebels gunned down two political workers in upper Assam's Tinsukia district around 5.30 pm on Sunday. Both the deceased were talking with the village head when two motor-cycle borne youths killed them from point-blank range.

"The youths came to the village head's house in Mohong village under Pengery police station along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border where the duo were talking," D. Bora, a police official told this correspondent over telephone from Tinsukia.

"The deceased were identified as Kamal Moran (22) and Tapu Saikia (40)," the police official said.

An unconfirmed source has however said the deceased were political party workers.

Earlier Sunday, an ULFA militant Sergeant Major Ranjit Bora was killed by Army's 6 J&K Rifles at Nijam Pathar in Tinsukia district. A pistol, ammunition and incriminating documents were found from him.
