Bhogali Bihu celebrated with full festive mood in Sivasagar district

Bhugali or Magh Bihu is celebrated with full-festivity in the historical Sivasagar district of Assam. After the Uruka, the Bhugali mela are organised in different parts of the district. In these programmes, the traditional sports and games like buffalo fight, Coke-fight, traditional boat racing, the making of traditional Assamese recipes are held. In some parts cultural programmes are also organised.


The Tai-Ahom Yuba Chatra Parishad has organised Bhugali mela in the historical Ronghar, which is inaugurated by the speaker of the Assam Assembly Mr. Pranab Gogoi. In this programme, the buffalo fight, the coke-fight and exhibition of ethnic culture are exhibited.


Like the previous years traditional boat racing competition is held at upper-Nazira Koibotra gaon. The buffalo fights are also organised in historical Rupohi pathar,Sivasagar, Kopohua gaon,Nazira and Borkola of Gorgaon.


In some places these programmes will be continue for one week.

Chilarai Jayanti observed at Namti

Nazira district and Namti regional Koch Rajbonshi Sonmiloni jointly observed the 502nd birthday of Chilarai at Udaipur M.E. School, Namti on February 7. The day long programme was started with flag hosting and reminiscence by the Nazira District President, Lalit Dutta. CBI nets ONGC GM on bribery charges

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday arrested ONGC’s civil wing General Manager P K Bora charging him with taking bribe from a contractor in his office. Before that an eleven-member CBI team from Guwahati had arrived in Sivasagar and probed the bribery allegations leveled by a contractor, Chanchal Konwar. Bora allegedly had demanded bribe for his bills to be passed for work done. The CBI team headed by DSP Zamang recovered cash 80,000 from the possession of Bora.

Relief distributed to the fire affected families at Borguri Mishing Gaon

National Education Social & Traditional Knowledge Foundation (NEST), Sivasagar handed over relief to the fire affected families at Borguri Mishing Gaon of Udoipur-Nitaipukhuri in Sivasagar district on Sunday. Members of NEST under the leadership of Punaram Mili, Charman and President of All India ONGC SC/ST employees Association, handed over food items, utensils and clothes to the deserted families. On last Friday (February 3), the houses of Umeswar Tai and Gobin Tai were completely gutted in a devastating fire.

Married woman gang raped, one nabbed at Sonari

A case of gang rape of a newly married woman is registered at Sonari police station of Sivasagar district . According to police, the victim, a labour of Joboka T.E. was gang raped by six culprits when she returned from work on January 29. According to police, one of the accused Ratul Kurmi (25) was arrested by police on Friday. The five others accused - Chandan Tasa, Pinku Dey, Ajoy, Dombaru and Chandan Urang are now absconding.

Stolen goods recovered at Amguri

Amguri police recovered huge number of stolen goods from the possession of Boluram alias Jayanti Hira of Amguri Hira gaon on Friday. The recovered items include, a laptop, a television, a mobile handset, one bicycle and precious assamese traditional utensils from the house.

Shoot out near Sivasagar police station

Unidentified person shot Shankar Ballabh Sarmah, owner of Classic Wine shop at K.P. Chariali of Sivasagar town, on Thursday night. Sharma was admitted at hospital under serious condition. This incident creates panic and sensation among the citizens of the town. The shop was at a distance of half kilometer from the Sivasagar Police station.
