Blockade called off in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji

Its a sigh of relief for Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts. KMSS and other anti-dam protesters have called off the month long road blockade.

The decision was taken hours after Dispur sent letters to the agitators inviting them for talks in Dispur on Thursday at Dispur. Talking to reporters in Lakhimpur on Tuesday, KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi said the blockade is quite temporary and that they would hope a positive outcome of the talks.

Addressing a press conference in Dispur, minister Rockybul Hussain, who also happens to be a members of the ministerial group said, “ we are going to hold the talks on January 5 at the secretariat with the agitation leaders, civil society and experts.” He said they have invited KMSS, TMPK AASU who have been spearheading the anti big dam agitation since December 16.

Hussain further said discussion will also be held with members of the civil society and experts.

Notably, the ongoing agitation had totally paralysed construction work of the dam and resulted in scarcity of essential items to the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh.
