Freedom fighter Radhakanta Talukdar no more
Eminent actor, freedom fighter, ex president, Barpeta District Sahitya Sabha, Social worker vs Education officer Radhakanta Talukdar breathed his last in his residence at Dakshin Hati on yesterday at about 8.20. During last few days he had been ill due to the old age. The people of Barpeta mourned for this renowned drama actor, freedom fighter and education officer of Barpeta. Radhakanta Talukdar was born in the month of December in 1923 in Dakshin hati, Barpeta. He passed his matriculation examination from Barpeta Vidyapith H. S. School in 1944 and passed B.A. degree from Cotton college in 1950. During his students career he had to go to jail in the 1942’s freedom movement. He started his service life in the year in 1951 as the asstt. teacher of Chenga High School and later on joined in Barpeta govt. H.S. School as an asstt teacher. In later periods he remained as the Inspector of the schools and from this same post he got retirement from the service.
During his childhood he was interested in drama acting and had started his acting in the “ Jatras-Abhinay” of Barpeta Satra. He was not only an actor but also he wrote a number of dramas like-- “ Satyameba Jayate”, “ Berar Aarar Balishal”, “Daitya Ratnakar”, “ 1942 Chanar Andolanar Barpetat Edin” etc. His another book was “ Sonali Sowaran”. He was also a silpi( artist)pensioner, who remained the president of Barpeta Sahitya Sabha from 9th jan,1988 to 10th jan,1989 and president of the well known cultural organization of Barpeta “ Sankardev Kalakshetra” for 20 years continuously. He formed that organization with his utmost skill. He was also the president of Freedom Fighter Sanmilan, Barpeta, Ex president Milan Mandir Natya samaj, ex President Asom Natya Sanmilan, Barpeta district committee, Barpeta unit, ex President Barpeta district pensioner Santha,ex President R. T. Model English school, president Asom Keshari Jatiya Vidyalaya and with so many schools and organizations he was closely related. His eternal body was brought to these various organizations to offer him last tribute. He was creamated at Nakhanda para creamation ground today at 10 am. He left his wife, three sons and two daughters. His sad demise is a great loss for the people of Barpeta. The Barpetians had lost one of the guardians.

Two ULFA 709 battalion cadres were killed in an encounter at Nasatra village under Sarthebari PS in Barpeta district yesterday at about 1 pm. One of the dead person was identified as Pingal Deka, son of Gangadhar Deka of Nasatra village and the other dead cadre was not identified till filing this report. The additional sessions Judge FTC (First Track Court), Barpeta sentenced one Pranab Nath of Howly village in Barpeta district under U/S 448/380/302 IPC imprisonment for life in connection with a murder case. According to report, on June 12, 2006, the accused entered into the house of one Ananta Roy of Bamundi village under Sarthebari, Barpeta dist and killed the son of the family with sharp weapon and had taken Rs.2000/ and some ornaments from their house. Ananta Das lodged an FIR before I/C Howly on June 13, 2006.
One person died and about 20 others injured in a bus accident at Kaljhar, near Howly in Barpeta district today at around 4 pm. A Tinsukia-bounded bus (No- AS-01-V1367) set out from Barpeta Road met with the accident at Kaljhar on No.31 National Highway near Howly. The deceased was not identified till filing this report. The injured passengers were sent to Howly PHC and Barpeta civil hospital.
The chairperson, Assam State commission for women, Mridula Sahariya visited Bajali sub-division recently to attend in a discussion meet about various legal matters, women empowerment and to bring awareness regarding pollution free environment. In this meeting a Bajali sub-division women cell was formed taking 10 members with Deepak Kr. Choudhury, SDO, (civil), Bajali as chairman and Puspanjali Das, ACS, CO, Bajali Revenue Circle as member. The mighty river Beki eroded most of the part of Jania area in Barpeta district. At present it has become a threat to the Jania xatra. About 35 houses have been collapsed. So far 50 villages and thousands of villagers have became homeless and taking shelter government reserves and on the road. Nabajit Das Pathak elected as the Deka Xatriya of Barpeta that was held on June 28. The uniqueness of the selection of the Xatriyas of Barpeta Xatra is that here the representatives are selected in a election. This time, for the post of Deka Xatriya, three candidates filed nominations namely. Nabajit Das Pathak defeated his nearest rival Sadhucharan Das by 1111 votes. The new committee of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Barpeta was formed recently at "BARK DIOGNOSTIC CENTRE" in a general meeting. Normal life in entire Barpeta district paralyzed due to irregular load-shedding by the Electricity Board. Out of twenty four hours electricity is available only three to four hours a day. As the half-yearly examinations have started from today the continuous load-shedding has seriously affected the academic environment of the entire district.
Works in several offices particularly those using computers without generators have been badly affected indicating large scale backlogs during days to come. Computers and inverters at home have become only an ornamental goods as these have been lying idle for months together. Even the telephone exchanges are hit for days together.

Twenty one injured in a road accident at Sonkuchi Colony of Barpeta town today at about 7.40 am. According to report, a Dhuburi-bound highspeeded Bolero pickup FB (No-AS-15 C 0699) vehicle lost it's control and 21 labours of that vehicle were injured. To rescue the injured the 108 health service and police were informed by the gathered people. However, help reached an hour late. At this, the gathered people were enraged and blocked the road for some moment. They rescued the injured people and sent to the Barpeta civil hospital for treament.
