Patkai Trekkers, an NGO, with the help of the organizing committee, paid tribute to the martyrs of Sepoy Mutiny who fought bravely before fell to the bullets of the British troops at the historic Latu, at Malegarh in Karimganj district at the premises of Guwahati Press Club on Sunday.
It is for the first time that such tribute is being paid to the martyrs publicly in the history. On the occasion in which several noted personalities including historians took part, several resolutions were taken.

The place Latu bears historical mark and it should be included in the curriculum of the schools and colleges of the state. Detailed research work should be conducted on the topic.
The place Latu which is situated at the Indi-Bangladesh border should be declared a national heritage site. Besides, a war memorial should be instituted at the site.
Noted historian Dayananda Borgohain, H N Dutta, director of state archaeological department, Kailash Sharma, noted social worker and sports organizer, Naba Thakuria, the secretary of Guwahati Press Club, Bhaben Sharma, social worker etc were present on the occasion besides others.
Malegarh hillock in Latu, a small village in Karimganj, carries the mark of history, made during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. Rebel sepoys fought here valiantly against a contingent of the Sylhet Light Infantry of the British under the command of Major Byng. They killed the major. The graves of 26 of these fallen rebel sepoys lie at Malegarh fort on a hillock at Latu.

A NDFB-S rebel identified as Buddhiram Basumatary alias Birkw of Amteka Debrabil in Chirang district was apprehanded from Karigaon area in Kokrajhar by security forces belonging to the Army on Sunday morning.
