Subject: Uncertain fate of two Assamese Journalists in Myanmar


Respected Sir,


Namaskar. Hope this letter finds you in fine spirits and health. We, on behalf of Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA), would like to inform you that two Assamese journalists remain untraced since their detention in Myanmar (also known as Brahmadesh) on December 3 last. Both the journalists had reportedly gone inside the country for interviewing Paresh Baruah, the self-styled military chief of banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).


The news broke on December 4, 2011, when the news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported about their detention somewhere in Myanmar-China border areas. The PTI quoted RK Singh, Union Home Secretary for the information. While Singh denied the detention of Paresh Baruah who is at large after fleeing from Bangladesh, he informed that 'ULFA leader Jivan Moran and an Indian journalist were detained in Myanmar’ (http://www.thehindu.com/news/ national/article2686576.ece). Later it was revealed that two journalists (namely Rajib Bhattacharya who works for a newly launched English daily ‘Seven Sister's Post’ from Guwahati and a photo-journalist Pradip Gogoi) were detained inside Myanmar.


The Chief Editor of the newspaper, Subir Bhaumik, who used to work for BBC as East India Correspondent till last year, said in a television interview that his colleague (Rajib Bhattacharya) went to Myanmar in the middle of October last. “It was his project and he was determined to take the assignment,” Subir Bhaumik said adding that he had no contacts with Rajib Bhattacharya since then.


Rajib’s wife Rashmi Sharma, also a journalist, said in a television bite that she received an SMS weeks ago, where the journalist only said that he was fine and waiting for the interview.


Hiranya Bhattacharya, Rajib’s father and a former DGP of Assam, said in a television bite that he has no information about Rajib going inside Myanmar. “I only knew that Rajib went to Imphal (capital of Manipur) and later he was supposed to move to Aizawl (capital of Mizoram),” Hiranya Bhattacharya said.


The duo (Rajib Bhattacharya and Pradip Gogoi) were reportedly detained in the north-eastern part of Myanmar bordering China and later the Myanmarese authority released both of them after confiscating their laptop, camera and cell phones (http://www.dnaindia.com/ india/report_uncertainty-over- fate-indian-journalists- detained-in-myanmar_1621813). Both the journalists were supposed to arrive in Tamu-Moreh (Myanmar-India border point) by the evening of December 4. Rajib’s wife in Guwahati was contacted by some officials in the Union Home Ministry and assured that Rajib was released by the Myanmarese authority and he will soon enter Indian side (by December 4 itself). But till this moment, both the journalists have not returned to Assam. No information is available with the family about their whereabouts. The Guwahati based journalists contacted the India Embassy in Yangon where the office of the Ambassador denied having any information (about the detention of Indian journalists and subsequent release inside Myanmar).


We have not seen any statement about the incident from the Myanmarese government. Unfortunately the Assam government led by Sri Tarun Gogoi and even the Union Home Ministry have not issued any statement about the incident till date.


We are really worried about the confusing reports regarding the fate of the two journalists, who have neither come back, nor have been traced by any agency.


So we would like to make a formal request to you for taking personal interest in this matter, so that journalists Rajib Bhattacharya and Pradip Gogoi are traced and their return to India is ensured at the earliest. The Myanmarese government may also be approached by the PMO for relevant information about the two journalists.

7 fall ill in food poisoning

Flood situation takes grim turn

There is no let-up in the overall flood situation on Saturday. The overall scene deteriorated following torrential rains for the past couple of days inundating low lying human habitations and cropland. Among the districts affected are Barpeta, Darrang and Dhubri. In Bajali subdivision of Barpeta, surging waters of the Kaladiya river breached dykes and embankments at many places flooding villages and fields. The civil hospital at Pathsala has been evacuated on account of rising water levels in the town. Hundreds of families at Maripur Anandpur village of Bajali have moved to safer places after water entered their homes.

Hint of improved admin in rural areas

Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Rockybul Hussain said on Saturday that the state will improve the administrative system in rural areas during the current 12th Five Year Plan period. Talking to reporters in Tezpur on Saturday Hussain said that social audits in all offices involved with projects in rural areas would be undertaken twice a year, instead of once as is the practice now, for bringing in greater transparency in utilisation of funds and further the development agenda. Major train tragedy averted in Morigaon

Hundreds of passengers had a narrow escape when the driver of the Dibrugarh-bound Kamrup Express found a goods train stationed on the same track and applied emergency brakes in time in Morigaon district on Friday.According to information, the driver found a foodgrain-loaded goods train near the Barahu railway station ahead on the track and applied emergency brakes. The express was delayed for more than two hours as a result and later left for Dibrugarh.

Boat capsizes: 30 passengers missing

At least 30 passengers are missing after a country boat capsized in a river in Bongaigaon district on Friday. According to police, the country boat capsized in the river Champawati when it was on sailing from Chapar in Dhubri district to Oudubi with 40 people and cattle on board. Ten passengers managed to escape death while 30 others are missing in water. Rescue operation is going on.

Wild elephant kills forest officer

In yet another shocking incident of man elephant conflict, a wild tusker trampled to death a beat officer in Nagaon district on Friday. The incident took place when beat office Hem Kanta Sharma was on patrol duty in a forest area under Rangaghar in Kampur. Sharma was trampled to death when he alongwith a team of guards tried to disperse two wild elephants. All of a sudden, one of the duo chased him back and killed the officer.

Govt flayed on Cachar-Krimganj border

Opposition BJP on Friday flayed the government for keeping the Cachar- Karimganj border porous resulting in largescale infiltration of anti-social elements. Talking to reporters after visiting some border villages on Friday, BJP's All India Mahila Morcha general secretary Shipra Goon said that there is a largescale infiltration of anti-social elements from the neighbouring country. She said that that it was quite impossible for BSF to guard every inch of the border.

Silchar-Lumding train service resumes

Train services on the Silchar-Lumding line resumed on Friday after a fortnight as heavy landslides had damaged rail tracks. The train service connecting Assam and North Eastern states of Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram resumed when a passenger train moved on the line on an experimental basis from Badarpur to Lumding. The Barak Valley Express, Cachar Express and Agartala-Lumding Express today resumed services as per schedule.Notably, train services remained suspended since June 1 after heavy landslides due to incessant rainfall damaged tracks at several places.
