Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.
The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.
She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.
Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.
A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

Forty people have been injured while a Dergaon-Jorhat bus fell into a deep gorge before it reached the destination. According to information, the incident that left ten people seriously injured took place at around 10-45 in the morning near the Jorhat Coca Cola factory when the driver lost the control after developing a technical snag. Later local people came out and rescued the passengers. The injured people have been rushed to the hospital. Some of them have been released after primary treatment. The driver is remaining untraced. A surrendered ULFA cadre has made a startling revelation on Tuesday that ULFA utilizes its newly recruited fellows in the strikes against Hindi speaking people along with army and police. After surrendering before Dibrugarh district administration officials ULFA cadre Partha Kachari said the new cadres are forced to run ULFA's attack. A failure government on the law and order front in Assam has been behind the BLT-NDFB clashes in the Bodo dominated areas in the state. This is alleged by Assam BJP unit spokesman Charan Deka. Addressing a pres conference in the city on Monday Mr Deka alleged that the Government has been failing to control the deteriorating the state’s law and order scenario. Deka cited some figures to justify his claim saying 2152 murder cases with 2024 rape cases in the state from April 2005 to November 2007. Deka also maintained that the Government is going to to impose new entry tax on some essential commodities.
Police detained several workers of the state animal husbandry and veterinary department at the dharna site on Monday while they were holding protest in front of the directorate office demanding government steps to regularize their jobs. They alleged that despite repeated appeal the governmenthas been failing to address their issues. Their salary amounts are inadequate and that too is irregular. A Kamrup district session court on Monday sentenced life imprisonment for four CRPF jawans chargesheeted by CBI in the Imphal firing case where nine people were killed in 1995. Also they are fined Rs 5000 each.The incident took place at the Regional Institute of Medical Science campus in Imphal, the capital town of Manipur. One hardcore ULFA cadre died at an encounter with Army in Dibrugarh district's Kakopathar area on Monday. According to information, the ULFA cadre was identified as Kanak Chetia who is known to be the outfit's IED expert. A chinese pistol and some explosive materials have been recovered from his possession.
