Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.
The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.
She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.
Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.
A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

ULFA Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah is understood to have been arrested in Bangladesh. But the Union home ministry has yet to confirm it. According to information, Paresh Barua apprehended by the Bangladeshi security agencies about two weeks back days as he was trying to cross over to Bangladesh via Myanmar border after visiting Chinese Yunnan province.
Barua was in Yunnan about four months ago after the Bangladeshi authorities launched a massive crackdown on anti-India insurgent groups.
Dr. Steven Solnick, Director of Ford Foundation visited Mushroom Development Foundation (MDF), Guwahati with the objective to look into the efforts undertaken by MDF in the field of poverty alleviation in connection with a project supported by Ford Foundation through The Foundation for Social Transformation (FST). The court of Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate on Sunday remanded Ranjan Daimary to 14 days police custody after the NDFB chief was produced before the court. The leader of an influential tribal militant leader of Assam is held by Bangladesh and handed over to Indian authority today, trusted media agencies of India have reported. Ranjan Daimary, the head of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (anti-talk faction) was arrested by Dhaka authority three days back, where he was hiding for many years.
