Pride of Assam Dr Bhupen Hazarika is no more. He was 85. The end came at 4:30pm on Saturday at the Mumbai-based Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.
Hazarika was born in 1926, at Sadiya in Assam. He did his Intermediate in Guwahati in 1942, and went on to Banaras Hindu University to complete his B. A and completed his M A in Political Science in 1946. Soon after, he did PhD from Columbia varsity in New Yorkin Mass Communication. He also received the Lisle Fellowship from Chicago University, USA to study the use of educational project development through cinema.
Dr Hazarika was also ranked amongst the leading film makers of the nation. It was he who dared to propagate the cinema movement with unputdownable contribution which is why, he was awarded dada Saheb Phalke award. He was also a legislative Assembly as an Independent member from 1967 to 1972. In this period, he did everything possible to set up the first government film studio named after Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla.
He earned reputation of a notable film maker with Era Batar Sur, Shakuntala, Pratidhwani, Lotighoti, Chick Mick Bijuli, Mon Projapati and Siraj. In 1992, he presided the Assam Sahitya Sabha in its Sivasagar session. Last year, he was given the Assam Ratna award.

Here is good news for the food lovers of the region. The Morung, a restaurant which has been serving ethnic food of northeast, is organizing a series of food festivals in order to promote the local food items in a bigger way from November 23. Much to utter disappointment to the Assamese community in Delhi, a Delhi university student committed suicide on Saturday. Five security personnel guarding Water Resources Minister Rajib Lochan Pegu have been injured when their vehicle collided with a dumper truck at Golaghat on Saturday. The incident took place on the National Highway 37 near Dergaon when Pegu’s convoy was on its way from Jorhat to Guwahati. The driver is understood to have lost control over the pilot car before it rammed into the dumper truck. Three of whom are stated to be in serious condition. Dispur is contemplating an education and employment generation panel to link up the two so that the youth could get jobs with their education. According to chief minister Tarun Gogoi, said economic development of the state, education, employment generation and farmers were its top priorities. He further said that his government is mooting to launch a state nutrition mission to tackle the problems of anaemia and malnutrition, found among the women and children of Assam.
