Central Assam bandh call by Tiwa organisations

In support of its demand for inclusion of the Tiwa Autonomous areas in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and in protest against the State Government's move to hold panchayat elections in the Tiwa autonomous areas, four Tiwa organisations call for a ten hour central Assam bandh from 5 am on October 24. The organisations of the bandh include the All Tiwa Students' Union (ATSU),the Autonomy Demand Struggling Commitee,All Tiwa Women's Association and Tiwa Cultural Society. In a statement, the ATSU said that the state Government had been trying to impose the panchayat elections in the Tiwa autonomous areas with a design to undermine the Tiwa Autonomous Council. It is further said that the government has not been holding the elections to the Autonomous council since its formation in 1995.

A two hour National Highway blockade programme will follow the bandh programme on October 29 in protest against the said objectives.
