The Karbi Anglong district which is called ‘Green Lungs’ of Assam now turning into stiff challenge to safeguard due to incessant cutting of logs campaign that launched by timber smugglers. Timbers planted covering in large scale areas under the East Forest division several years ago under massive threat. According to report, cutting of valuable timbers under the east forest division is continuing by the timber smugglers in active support of local people and the logs are being supplied by them to the nighbouring Nagaon district through the Jamuna river by tying up rafts.
Rltogether 130 numbers of rafts of timbers were recovered from Jamuna river by the Bakaliaghat forest on Wednesday. According to forest report, on the basis of specific information of the Bakaliaghat forest under the readership of Aurabindha Talukdar, Ranger, West forest division an intensive operation was launched on Wednesday midnight at Jamuna river.
During the operation at around 3 am four-group of timber smugglers were noticed carrying timber rafts through Jamuna river by the forest team. Promptly the forest operation team attempted to nab the smugglers. But it is interesting that though the forest protection forces opened fire three rounds in blank to stop they manage to escape from the spot taking advantage of darkness.
