A training cum demonstration on “Farm Mechanization for Improved Agriculture” was organized in Lela village, Dudhnoi on 15th Oct’ 2007 by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dudhnoi, Goalpara. Nearly thirty farmers from Lela, both men and women actively participated in the programme. The need of farm mechanization is an urgent need of hour in Assam since there is acute shortage of farm power, in addition we derive only about 20% of our used power from mechanical and electrical sources.
Stressing on the need of farm mechanization, Er. Benjamin Kaman presented a comparative picture of farm power availability and food grain productivity in two states of Punjab and Assam. He said that food grain productivity increases linearly with increase in farm power use. Increasing efficiency, executing field works in time, proper use of resources and reducing drudgery are the basic reasons to adopt mechanization in agriculture, he said. The farmers were been taught how every step of agricultural operations such as land preparation, seeding/planting, fertilizer use, weeding, interculture, use of insecticide, harvesting, threshing, milling etc. can be done through farm implements and machineries. Some useful machineries and implements were been discussed covering their field capacity, price and operational cost so that the farmers can visualize the economic advantage of adopting these.
Mr Biswajit Dey and Mr. Jyotish Barman, from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, also attended the programme, who conveyed the farmers about KVK and upcoming activities such as On Farm Trial and Front Line Demonstration to propagate new technologies to farmers.
The programme also had a demonstration on “Hand Winnower”. The farmers had a hands in experience of operating hand winnower developed by ICAR in farmers field in Lela. Participating farmers, both men and women operated the implement and were very satisfied with its function.
The training cum demonstration was second programme organized by Er. Kaman of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dudhnoi. The first programme was organized on 15th June’ 2007 covering Watershed Management, Water Harvesting and Irrigation. The farmers were been taught basic guiding rules to conserve soil and water and optimize production for sustainability. Water harvesting techniques were discussed in detail.
