Militants open fires on NH 37
In stepped up offensive ahead of Independence Day one person was killed and several others were injured when tribal separatists of the outlawed Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) opened indiscriminate firing along the National Highway 37 in Panbari area near Bokakhat in Golaghat district. The incident took place at around 4.00 am in the morning when the militants started firing from the nearby hillocks. More than a dozen vehicles came under the firing, in which one truck driver was killed. A six member group of Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) also came under the firing of the militant and they were severely injured. They are identified as Ranjit Changmai Vice-President AJYCP, Abidur Rahman, Polash Changmai, Prosanta Saikia, Diganta Gogoi and Mrinal Bora. The injured are undergoing treatment at Golaghat and Jorhat Civil Hospital. It is pertinent to mention that KPLT has called for a 60-hour bandh that began at 5 am. Meanwhile Manoj Barua President of AJYCP denounced the firing and called for observance of black day tomorrow against terrorism. All Assam Gorkha Students Union also vehemently condemns today’s attack.
