A 28 years old woman on Saturday, July 16 died after her in-laws allegedly set her on fire over dowry demands. The incident took place at a village nearby Dhupdhara in Goalpara district. According to a police complaint filed by the father of the victim, identified as Ruby Choudhury, she was set on fire on July 8 by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. With 90 percent burn, she was rushed to a Guwahati hospital by her neighbours where after nine days she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday last. Ruby, hailing from Sarthebari in Barpeta district, had got married four years ago with Jitumoni Choudhury of Khekapara village near Dhupdhara and since then she was being harassed for dowry by her in-laws.Ruby's father, Ghanashyam Bhuyan, informed Dhupdhara police about the dowry dispute and police have registered a case against the victim's husband, Jitumoni Choudhury, in-laws Dipnarayan Choudhury, Binadutta Choudhury and Rita Choudhury (Jitumoni’s sister). Police arrested all the four members and sent to Goalpara jail. Meanwhile, after arriving the body of Ruby at Khekapara on Saturday night, the angry family members of Ruby along with some local villagers cremated her body at the premises of her husband's house. They also damaged the house and properties.

Explosive Recovered at Rangjuli

Three kilos of powerful explosive along with other equipments were recovered in a joint search operation by police at a village near Rangjuli in Goalpara district last night. Police also arrested two suspected ULFA linkmen in this regard. According to sources, acting on a tip of Special Branch of Assam police led by SP Ranjan Bhuyan and Goalpara police led by Addl SP Sushanta Biswa Sharma launched an operation at Landakunda village under Dhupdhara police station and made the recovery. The two arrested persons were identified as Bekingson Marak (45) and Jyoticharan Boro (24). Assam, M’laya to discuss Langpih on Thursday

Assam and Meghalaya are all set to hold a high level meeting on Thursday to defuse the simmering tension in Langpih. The meeting is slated to be held in the chief secretary level in Guwahati to discuss the recent eviction drive in the area where Kamrup district administration demolished a public hall allegedly built by West West Khasi Hills district administration. Kamrup district administration on Saturday dismantled a community hall of the Hima Raid Mynsaw at Langpih during an eviction drive. NIA chargesheets three Manipur ultras

The National Investigation agency on Monday chargesheeted three suspected Manipuri rebels for providing training and supplying arms and ammunition to Naxal groups. The case was filed before the designated court of NIA in Guwahati against N Dilip Singh, Senjam Dhiren Singh alias Raghu and Arnold Singh under various sections of Unlawful (Activities) Prevention Act. CIL-NTPC deal for Bongaigaon power plant

Coal India will sign fuel supply agreement with NTPC for 750 MW power plant in Assam. Disclosing this in parliament on Monday, Minister of State for Coal Pratik Prakashbapu Patil said that the government has asked Cola India to strike deal with NTPC to set up 3x 250 MW power project at Bongaigaon. He said that the coal ministry has already issued instructions to Coal India Ltd to sign fuel supply agreement for supply of coal. The minister also said that one unit of the power project of NTPC of a capacity of 250 MW was likely to be commissioned next fiscal, which the other two units in 2014-15 and 2015-16. IED seized from ULFA linkmen A major incident of explosion was averted when police recovered a powerful IED in Goalpara town on Monday. 5 held in bitumen theft case

Police arrested five persons on Sunday in connection with the theft of bitumen, worth Rs 50 lakh in Morigaon district. Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested five persons from Dharamtul area of the district and seized huge quantities of bitumen from them. The bitumen, estimated to be worth around Rs 50 lakh, had been stolen by the five from a consignment for use in ongoing construction activity at National Highway number 37.

One killed in Golaghat road mishap

One person was killed and three others seriously injured in a road mishap in Golaghat district on Sunday.The driver of a speeding car lost control of the vehicle which skidded off the road killing one person on the spot and injuring three others in Badulipar area. The dead has been identified as Meherban Khan and the injured have been admitted to a local hospital.
