Under the theme “Forest: Nature at Your Service”, this year’s World Environment Day was celebrated by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra(KVK), Nagaon with a day-long programme in the premises of Missa High School with active collaboration from Saviour Society, Kaliabor anl NGO, on the 5th June 2011. The programme kick started with the plantation of different species of tree saplings in the school compound with active participation from all categories of people which was followed by a drawing competition on environmental awareness among 75 nos. of school children in three categories, organized with active cooperation from Kala Niketan Art School, Missa.
An awareness meeting was also organized on this occasion which was presided over by the Headmaster of the high school, Sri Siba Upadhyay. At the outset, Dhiren Nath of KVK narrated the objectives of organizing the programme and spoke on different forms of environmental pollution and their control measures. Addressing the gathering of about 100 school children, distinguished guests, parents and teachers, Dr. T.P.Saikia, Programme Coordinator of KVK, Nagaon elaborately described the significance of celebrating the World Environment Day. He called upon all present to be fully conscious of environment protection and its conservation. He also discussed the importance of planting trees for the well being of humanity that also reminds us of our duty to safeguard the environment and reduce the loss of biodiversity.
Dr. P.K.Das, Principal Scientist of the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Shillongani addressed the gathering as chief guest and emphasized on various aspects of environment conservation including judicious use of pesticides and alternate methods of plant protection to reduce the environmental pollution. Ripen Sarma, an employee of Kelyden Tea Estate and social activist and Rekha Madrasi, a class X student of the school also spoke on the occasion. The results of the drawing competition were announced by Pranab Acharya, the Principal of Kala Niketan. Besides prizes and certificates, the wining students were also gifted saplings of valuable tree species for planting in their homesteads. The programme was also attended by J.K.Dutta and U.K..Deka of the KVK. The day-long programme of the Environment Day celebration ended with vote of thanks by Jayanta Borah, Secretary of Saviour Society.
