In the last asssembly election, the Asom Gana Parished was unable to get a single seat in upper Assam along with other 12 district of Assam. Under Golaghat district - Sarupather, Bokakhat, Khumtai and Golaghat LACs are captured by the INC. It is mentionalbe that the Golaghat is the birth place of AGP. In Jorhat district all 6 LACs are own by the congress. In Sivasagar all 6 LACs, in Dibrugar 6 out of total 7 LACs and in Tinsukia district 4 out of 5 LACs were gone to the Congress Party. In entire Upper Assam only Dibrugar and Dumduma LAC own by the opposition BJP. AGP lost in Sarupather, Khumtai, Dergaon, Amguri, Tingkhang, which were in their hand after the Assembly election of 2006. In entire upper Assam AGP faild to show its existance in any constituency.

Congress leader and Nazira MLA Debobrata Saikia has demanded a special assembly session to discuss the vexed Nagalim issue. Veteran Congress leader in Nazira Tonkeshwar Saikia breath his last at his own residence of Nazira Simaluguri on Thursday. He was 81 and survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. Saikia, the elder brother of former Assam chief minister Hiteswar Saikia died of prolonged illness. Many political leaders, organizations and individuals have deeply condoled his death. 71th Independence Day was observed with traditional gaity and flavour in different places of Nazira Sub division.
