Noted educationist, journalist Thaneswar Hazarika passes away


Thaneswar Hazarika, of the Bokakhat Town and the local correspondent of The Sentinel newspaper died on Saturday at his residence following prolonged illness. Born in Majuli, Hazarika was 64 at the time of his demise.


Noted educationist, Hazarika retired as the principal-in-charge of JDSG college, Bokakhat. He was associated with various newspapers of Assam including The Assam Tribune, Dainik Asom, The Sentinel, The Eastern Clarion, Natun Dainik etc. He was serving as the president of Bokakhat Press Club at the time of his demise.


Highly admired by the people of Bokakhat, Hazarika leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a son, besides a host of relatives.

A lower court in Guwahati asked Dispur police to register cases against Chief Minister and revenue minister in connection with the self immolation of a KMSS activist.The court of Chief judicial magistrate on Monday asked police to register cases immediately against the duo on the basis of the complaints filed by Purnima Boro on February 24 after her husband died in self immolation attempt in Dispur.Notably, Dispur police have been avoiding the complaint citing a number of flaws in the statement of Boro against Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and revenue minister Prithivi Majhi.

A huge gathering of KMSS activists on Monday demanded immediate release of Akhil Gogoi, who was arrested on March 1 in connection with a self immolation case.Speakers after speakers came down heavily on Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his government for arresting the KMSS president along with 5 of his associates.They further sent a memorandum to the chief minister through the Kamrup(Metro) deputy commissioner Ashotosh Agnihotri demanding the release of Gogoi who was remanded to judicial custody three days back.

A senior BJP woman leader in Nagaon district on Monday joined AGP after she was not fielded in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls slated for April 7, 12 and 24.She is none other hand Mridula Borkakoty, the district women BJP president who joined the regional party at a brief function in Ambari on Monday.Sources told Assam Times that AGP would field her from Nagaon in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.      
Senior police and civil officials met reviewed the state’s over all law and order situation at a meeting in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls slated for April 7, 12 and 24.Chaired by Chief Secretary, the meeting discussed in detail the security arrangement in the poll bound states.
