People from Assam, who have made Kuwait their second home, are all set to celebrate Rongali Bihu this year with even more fanfare than ever before, under the aegis of Asom Association Kuwait, which was established and registered with the Indian Embassy, Kuwait, in 2009. This Organization formalized the celebration of Bihu in the State of Kuwait, and became instrumental in showcasing the rich culture & tradition of Assam. In the 3rd AGM held on 12th February 2011, a new Executive Committee was formed with Sri Anup Bora as Hony. President and Sri Bijan Goswami as Hony. General Secretary, to lead the activities of organization through the year 2011-12.
Over the past few years, the Assamese community in Kuwait had the opportunity to enjoy the enthralling performances by the likes of Zubin Garg and Manas Robin, who brought lot of glitz and color to the festivities here in in this part of the middle-east. This year the community is all set to sway to the music and melodies of yet another great singer from Assam – Shmti. Shanta Uzir. She will be accompanied by her Music Composer husband Sh. Bhupen Uzir. The cultural evening set for the 13th May, will be enriched by her Bihu songs along with her other famous hits. The venue for the ‘Shanta Uzir Nite’ will be the famous “Al Murjan” Banquet hall of “Hotel Crowne Plaza”, where performances from the local Assamese community will add variety, color and enthusiasm amongst the community.
Earlier, the onset of Bohag was celebrated by the Assamese community here by organizing a day long festivities of ‘Khel-dhemali’ and ‘ Bhoj’ in the Fintas Park, located in Mahboula, Kuwait. Members along with their children participated in the fun games and contests and the winners were suitably awarded with prizes and gifts.
Among the notable fresh initiatives of the Asom Association Kuwait, was the formal launch of a website www.kuwaitotasom.com to showcase and highlight the activities of the Organization. Members have enthusiastically responded by making this virtual forum a window to all that the organization stands for. Appropriately, the Assamese community has strived to create what the name of the website suggests Kuwait-ot-asom i.e an Assam in Kuwait.
The Centre has approved proposals to set up IIIT in Assam along with Tripura. These new Indian Institutes of Information Technology would be set up under the not-for-profit public-private partnership (N-PPP) mode.According to official sources, 11 State Governments have identified land and are in the process of identifying the industry partners. Forest personnel guarding the Kaziranga National Park have found one horn rhino carcass in Karbi Anglong district on Monday. The rhino was believed to have poached when it was found missing. According to KNP officials, the rhino came out of the park territory searching for food and the poachers took the advantage. Prime minister Monmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi are on a hurricane visit to Assam to take stock of the flood fury that claimed over 30 people during this month. Accompanied by chief minister Tarun Gogoi and PWD minister Ajanta Neog, Dr Singh and Gandhi, made an aerial survey from a chopper in Majuli, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Kaziranga. After a brief halt, the duo left for Guwahati to assess the situation in lower Assam. KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi on Sunday dared Chief Minister to disclose the details of his USA trip. Gogoi claimed that the Chief Minister’s foreign trip was purely a personel. Asom Gana Parishad on Sunday demands a special package of Rs30,000 crore for flood relief in the state. Two mild earthquakes jolted Assam and its neighbouring states on Sunday creating panic among the people in the time of flood. There was no report of any loss of life or damage in Assam. Karimganj police have arrested five people for allegedly attacking Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her second husband Jaki Jakir on Friday midnight. They were picked up on Saturday night from five different places in the Barak Valley district. Nath has filed an FIR with the police alleging that a mob had attacked her on political motivation.
