People from Assam, who have made Kuwait their second home, are all set to celebrate Rongali Bihu this year with even more fanfare than ever before, under the aegis of Asom Association Kuwait, which was established and registered with the Indian Embassy, Kuwait, in 2009. This Organization formalized the celebration of Bihu in the State of Kuwait, and became instrumental in showcasing the rich culture & tradition of Assam. In the 3rd AGM held on 12th February 2011, a new Executive Committee was formed with Sri Anup Bora as Hony. President and Sri Bijan Goswami as Hony. General Secretary, to lead the activities of organization through the year 2011-12.



Over the past few years, the Assamese community in Kuwait had the opportunity to enjoy the enthralling performances by the likes of Zubin Garg and Manas Robin, who brought lot of glitz and color to the festivities here in in this part of the middle-east. This year the community is all set to sway to the music and melodies of yet another great singer from Assam – Shmti. Shanta Uzir. She will be accompanied by her Music Composer husband Sh. Bhupen Uzir. The cultural evening set for the 13th May, will be enriched by her Bihu songs along with her other famous hits. The venue for the ‘Shanta Uzir Nite’ will be the famous “Al Murjan” Banquet hall of “Hotel Crowne Plaza”, where performances from the local Assamese community will add variety, color and enthusiasm amongst the community.



Earlier, the onset of Bohag was celebrated by the Assamese community here by organizing a day long festivities of ‘Khel-dhemali’ and ‘ Bhoj’ in the Fintas Park, located in Mahboula, Kuwait. Members along with their children participated in the fun games and contests and the winners were suitably awarded with prizes and gifts.



Among the notable fresh initiatives of the Asom Association Kuwait, was the formal launch of a website www.kuwaitotasom.com to showcase and highlight the activities of the Organization. Members have enthusiastically responded by making this virtual forum a window to all that the organization stands for. Appropriately, the Assamese community has strived to create what the name of the website suggests Kuwait-ot-asom i.e an Assam in Kuwait.

Bike Expedition of Gujarat passed the State

Hamidul Gani (Janty) A bike expedition under the slogan of 'Be Indian, Be United, Be in Peace', flagged off from Tuipang of Mizoram for 'India's East to West Green Belt Bike Expedition 2011 passed the state recently. The expedition organised by Sky High Adventures Club of Rajkot in Gujarat, arrived at Dhupdhara in Goalpara District on November 1 and it left for Siliguri after a brief halt. Noted Theater Actor Kamala Rabha passed away

Md. Hamidul Gani (Janty) Noted stage actor Kamala Rabha passed away after a prolonged illness at his own residence at Sakhati in Kamrup district on Friday, November 4. He was 65. His death was deeply condoled by various organisations and persons in Kamrup and Goalpara district. Born in 1946, he started his acting career in local drama groups. And later he joined several leading theatre groups of the state and involved for three decades. Give Ranjan we will give you peace: NDFB

NDFB on Friday makes it clear that the peace initiative with the government won’t proceed unless and until chairman Ranjan Daimary is released immediately. Addressing a press conference in the dense jungles along the Assam-Arunachal border, the outfit's education secretary B Naijib said figured three basic points apart from release of Ranjan Daimary. He said the government must allow the Bodo people to live in dignity. He further said the Bodo people must regain lost lands under 45 tribal belt and blocks.

SDPO body guard injured in ULFA attack

A senior police officer had a narrow escape at a shoot out in Sivasagar on Friday. But his body guard sustained bullet injured in the incident. The incident took place near Barhat where three motorcycle born ULFA men started indiscriminate firing on a sub divisional police officer at around 7 in the evening. The senior police officer escaped unhurt but his personal security guard Kamal Nath sustained bullet injury. He was rushed to the hospital. The incident took a couple of days after ULFA’s Paresh Baruah faction threatened to launch massive attack.

ULFA threatens to launch massive strike

ULFA’s anti-talk faction threatens to launch massive strike Assam. In an email statement sent to www.assamtimes.org ULFA’s publicity wing manager Arunodoy Dohotia said urged the common people to avoid the police stations and the security forces. Dohotia said they would target the security forces deployed to flush out the insurgent outfit. He further said that they would also launch the vital spots and the political leaders who are acting against the outfit in the name of crackdown. HSA FC ousted DMZP to enter the semi-finals at Tamchon Football Trophy

At the quarter-finals played between defending champion of North East Tamchon Memorial Football Trophy - Delhi Mizo Zirlai Pawl (DMZP) and last year first runners up Hmar Students' Association (HSA), the HSA FC defeated the DMZP today at Dr. Ambedkar Stadium, New Delhi by scoring a goal in a penalty shot in the second half of the match. Cremated girl surfaces alive!

In yet another bizarre incident, a young girl who was believed to have died a couple of days ago surfaced in a police station on Friday. It took place in Nagaon district. Nineteen-year-old Indrani Bora vanished with her boy friend Mukut Ali from Guwahati to Dhubri district on October 17. She was presumed to have kidnapped and killed. A body was found in Tezpur and a female body with injury marks was found at Bilasipara in Sonitpur district. It was mistakenly identified by the girl's family as that of Indrani. GNRC Health Check-up concludes

Nearly 20% journalists were detected with high sugar and blood pressure during a health check up camp organized by GNRC Hospitals at Guwahati Press Club today (Oct 29,2011). Over 100 member-journalists and other individuals participated in the camp which was inaugurated by eminent actor Pranjal Saikia. The inaugural ceremony was also graced by Br NC Borah, CMD of GNRC Hospitals.
